2026 Goumi

Thought I would start a thread for all things Goumi for this year.

Starting it off with a pic of my Red Gem which has been ripening fruit for a couple weeks now.

It is loaded with ripe fruit now.

I have never tried processing the fruit into jam… But gave that a test run today.

i had some strawberry and mulberry fruit already and needed a little more to make 2 pints of jam.

I picked enough red gem goumi fruit to do that.

It was a small batch.. 100 berries or so.

I used a potato ricer to extract the pulp and it did a pretty good job.

No pits.. some skin mostly pulp.

This is what the ricer filtered out.

I added the goumi pulp to my mixed berry jam and made a nice small batch of jam.

Anyone else got ripe goumi yet ?

You are all welcome to post anything goumi related here.

Thanks

Thanks for starting the thread! That jam looks excellent.

Here’s my survey from this morning. Central Illinois zone 5 or 6.

Catherine’s Find on it’s own roots. I overwintered it in the basement, so it didn’t end up going dormant. I was nervous about it dying this winter when I received it last fall. From now on it’s on it’s own though.

Wang Bo Seedling #1, purchased from England’s and planted last fall. This one had some winter dieback, so I pruned it down to help it recover.

Wang Bo Seedling #2. I overwintered this one in the basement with the Catherine’s Find. It’s being slow to take off now that it’s in the ground.

Wang Bo Seedling #3. This one needs to figure out how to grow vertically. It looks like a prime candidate for mound layering if I want to make a copy.

Sherwood, purchased from Almost Eden and planted this spring. It doesn’t seem to be waking up. I had a few small green leaves when I received it, and the roots were in pretty poor shape. It might be a goner.

Raintree Select, purchased from Raintree and planted this spring. Came in a small pot but had excellent roots. I think it will grow a ton this year.

Hidden Springs Seedling #1, purchased from Hidden Springs and planted this spring.

Hidden Springs Seedling #2.

Hidden Springs Seedling #3. Growing out in a container as an experiment. I’ll overwinter it in our unheated garage and plant it out next spring.

Carmine, purchased from Burnt Ridge and planted this spring.

Tillamook, purchased from Restoring Eden and planted last fall. I know it’s the same as Carmine, but I figured it would be nice to have the genetics in a different part of the yard.

Sunrise Ruby, purchased from Burnt Ridge and planted this spring. May be grafted.

Red Gem, purchased from Restoring Eden last spring. It’s now 5 ft tall.

Sweet Scarlet, purchased from Restoring Eden last spring. It’s now 5 1/2 ft tall.

Catherine’s Find purchased from Really Good Plants and grafted 3x onto autumn olive this spring. No signs of life yet.

Catherine’s Find Seedling #1 purchased from Really Good Plants and grafted 3x onto autumn olive this spring. A few buds opening.

Catherine’s Find Seedling #2 purchased from Really Good Plants and grafted 3x onto autumn olive this spring. A few buds opening.

Raintree Select received from Bill (thanks!!) and grafted 6x onto autumn olive this spring. No signs of life yet.

Forest Farm received from Bill (thanks!!) and grafted 5x onto autumn olive. No signs of life yet. I really hope this one takes as this variety seems to be “out of print”. Still trying to find more info on it if anyone knows more.

I would love to know how tall the two you purchased from Restoring Eden last year were when they arrived? I also ordered from them, One Red Gem and a Sweet Scarlett, and I’d love to get an idea of how much growth I should expect from them this year! They’ve already done quite a bit of growing, from about 6 inches tall to maybe a foot in two months since they have arrived.

Yours all look amazing! What will you do with so many goumi fruits?

WOW! The potato ricer is a great tip! The color is lovely as well.

This is what my 2 older Goumies look like.

They were planted early spring 2020.

They put on 3-4 ft of growth each year.. and I prune them back down to 7-8 ft.

Once they get established good.. you won’t need to fertilize them.. mine grow 3-4 ft a year with no fertilizer.

On the left Red Gem.. right Sweet Scarlet.

They have grafts of Carmine and Raintree Select on them.

A few years back I did an air layer of one of the Carmine grafts on my Red Gem.. and have that Carmine bush growing out in my orchard now… with grafts of Raintree Select added to it. I will add Red Gem to it next spring.

The RG and SS from Restoring Eden last spring were pretty tall, like 2 ft. The Tillamook I got from them in the fall was much smaller, maybe 8-10 inches. I watered the RG and SS through the hot months, but I can’t say for sure if they needed it. They were 5 ft by the end of the season. Good luck with yours!

What we do with all the fruit is TBD!

@BenCantrell… your birds are going to be very happy. You too.

With my two large bushes… and no bird protection… our birds eat all they want… and we do too.. and still many many berries fall to the ground.

I wish I could say that about my blueberries.

My one and only air layer of Goumi had only a tiny root going into the winter. I planted it near my back deck and it is starting to grow (2"). I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure it will survive. The lion is protecting the tree.

@Auburn.. I think you are near 300 miles south of me…

But my Red Gem ripened first fruits on 4/18.

I think in years past we have seen similar differences in ripening times.

I wonder why my Red Gem here in southern middle TN would ripen before Red Gems in more southern locations.

You should have an earlier and warmer spring than I do.

My Red Gem is in a full sun location.

Is yours ?

It seems to me that there should be several people in AL, GA, MS, FL getting ripe goumie before I do.

Perhaps they are just not reporting it.

IDK.

My first 2 bushes are at the backside of my orchard and the pines are starting to shade then. I will probably remove these as my other 2 in better locations get bigger.

@virginia.grows.trees.. I have used the potato ricer on small batches of persimmon before and it works well on them too.

I found the potato ricer on the clearance rack at TJMax for 5 bucks. My wife was shopping there.

Ps… Ate some of that jam this morning.. very good.

I think the goumie upped the flavor some.

my Raintree select today.

This is what my Raintree select berries looked like a few days ago.. very similar in size to Carmine.

Carmine berries. Looks like they may ripen about the same time.

This is my first year on Raintree fruit ripening.

Made a little more jam today.. about half mulberry half goumi.

Nice color.. going in the freezer for later.

Next… I will have to try all goumi jam.

My Pippi from @JohannsGarden and Carmine both grafted to autumn olive last spring are blooming now. Can’t wait!

Nice. Both varieties can bear quite heavily, so it may be helpful to thin a little this year to ensure they still keep growing vigorously, but you can definitely let them both bear some fruit without issue.
