2026 Goumi

I got about 4’ of growth on my Pippi grafts to autumn olive last year and have three branches ran through pots to get them on their own roots. Would pruning or removing blooms help with root production?

Does anyone take the time and effort to prune their goumi so the branches aren’t so crowded? Or let them grow naturally? I have several little bushes and 1 older goumi plus two older autumn olives. They are all about 5’ tall and a tangle of branches.

Wow, that bowl looks good. I’d like a spoon and a little sugar and just eat some of the ingredients. I bet that jam is terrific.

I just pruned mine aggressively this year for the first time in several. It’s planted really close to a fig, and was becoming a thorny mess.

If you got that much growth, then you probably don’t need to thin the fruit. I’m not sure whether or not they have any affect on layering.

On my early orchard walk I checked on the ripeness of the Goumi. Some are turning but they aren’t ripe yet.
Limb on young bush/tree grew about 5-6’.

Tied it up until I pick the berries.

Bad location but I need to let my newer planting fruit heavier.

My Red Gem is loaded with fruit.. many ripe. Picked several today.. there is a jam session comming.

Carmine is ripening now.. found one ripe enough to eat.. taste very similar to red gem but is not as sweet.

Found one Raintree select showing a little color.

Found one Sweet Scarlet showing a little red. The berries are sizing up some.

So the Goumi ripening order I see here is..

1.. Red Gem

2.. Carmine

3.. Raintree and Sweet Scarlet seem to be tied for 3rd.

Well.. from that big bowl of red gem goumi berries.. I got close to 2.5 cups of goumi pulp extracted with my potato ricer.

Made 3 and 1/4 half pints of goumi (only) jam.

It looks a little like a good tomato soup.

I will report back on how it taste in a day or two.

Freezer jam made this spring already… mostly strawberry, mulberry and goumi.

I tried the goumi only jam this morning.. and it was not nearly as impressive as strawberry or strawberry mulberry mix.

It was ok.. but not great… the flavor was kind of simple and it was more tart than the others.

I think goumi pulp would be best used in a berry mix… to add some tartness and different flavor.

Mulberry, goumi would be a good mix.

I made some strawberry, mulberry, goumi jam already and it was quite delicious.

Thanks for the update. Did the only goumi berry jam have any noticeable astringency?

@Auburn.. not that I tasted.

When I first got my goumis… the first 2 or 3 years I could taste astringency in the early.. not fully ripe berries.

But the last several years I have not tasted any astringency at all.

I think it is just OLD Me.. loosing the ability to taste lower levels of astringency.
Last fall I split a (crunchy orange) IKKJ persimmon with my son in law… and he noticed a little astringency… that I could not taste at all.

Perhaps a side effect of trying too many stringy persimmons… or just getting older ?

IDK but I don’t taste stringy now at all in goumi.

Thanks

My Sweet Scarlet has some odd shaped berries this year.

Did it get weird frost damage? Grow the seeds?

What a neat looking berry!

No weird frost damage that I’m aware of. I’m in the upstate SC 7b. AI seems to think it was either poorly pollinated, or something was eating on the fruit when it was developing, but I have several other plants and they all have normal fruit. I might try to plant a couple of them.

@Tedge .. a few of my Red Gem develop with odd shapes. It is mostly… the berry will look normal on one side but the other will be thin or depressed… like the fruit on the berry did not fully develop on both sides.

I did have a 29F frost while red gem was blooming and setting fruit… but my bushes are still loaded with fruit.. thousands of berries.

I had that same problem with this bush last year. Some of the berries were flat on one side, and round on the other. This is the first time I’ve seen pumpkin and beehive shaped berries.

Does it have it only start from a single point on? Or is it the whole bush?

The oddly shaped ones are probably 15%-20% of the bush, the rest are normal. I’ll double check when I get home, but I think it’s on several branches, not a single mutated/sport branch.
