Here’s an article about a guy who wanted to get to know every Apple available, after trying some home grown Golden Sweets and Spitzenbergs and he wrote a book.
I haven’t caught the bug yet,but maybe will have to try those.
Maybe the author is a relative of mine. Once I get started on a new variety; I burn the wires of the internet trying to dredge up better information.
Like my latest torment. The Payette Apple. A relatively modern apple that has all but disappeared. No fault of the fruit itself.
Who would not want the carefree growing ability of it’s Ben Davis parent; but who’s prodigy actually has a lot of flavor and storage time.
I have been in contact with Dan Bussey for quite a few years before these books were published. This book series and quest to catalog every apple has been going on for years and years. He finally had it published and printed in 7 volumes. I am fortunate enough to have two complete series of these books in my library. A LOT of wonderful information and fruit drawings.
He is working on another book(s) on apples now. I wish him luck doing this.
I should bring my set up from the basement, I like reading through fruit books in the winter. I get to taste all the wonderful apple flavors and textures in my mind.
So very true. Winter time is a great time to look thorough all the apple pages.
$150 on sale! Yikes! But…I’m thinking about it, lol.
Well worth it!!
BTW; I found Payette over in the UK:

I did end up buying the set in February, and I used it to cross reference with other books and with a couple websites before choosing scions to order for grafting next spring. Unbelievably, even with 7 volumes, a lot of the apples I was looking for are not in it! I think there’s opportunity to write another 7 apples, or at least a PNW apple history. I bought Lost Apples, too, and it focuses on the Washington orchard area more than anywhere else. Maybe when I retire I’ll write the PNW book (along with the 156 other things I plan to do when I retire!) ![]()
