Looking for this fungicide for my peaches (leaf curl), blueberries and strawberries.
A quick search shows Captan is widely available in IL nurseries and big box stores
Really? I am not getting these search results, mind sharing?
I was under the impression that California banned it, so the manufacturers stopped making it, so you can only get old stock for inflated prices.
I’ll stand corrected. I get plenty of hits when searching, but on further inspection all are out of stock.
same here, out of stock or 6X the price…looking into alternatives
I did just find some Captan 80 wdg for a reasonable price at Ag Care
looks like they have 2! thanks!
…also looked they charge 20+ for shipping so looks like im spending around 60-80 if I can find some
Yep, shipping sucks. 6.25 lbs for around $60 ain’t terrible though. I’ve been using 5 lbs. of 50 wp for about 5 years now.
I even searched ebay, nothing that aint sky high or worth posting.
good to know! thanks again. what crops have you used yours on?
About 100 apple trees 2-4 times a year. I used to hit about a dozen pear trees too, but the reading I did suggested not to.
The mome raths outgrabe, don’t they? Looks like captan is still OK in Canada and Europe, but I’ll be danged if I can find an unequivocal yay/nay on its use in the U.S.A. It does seem that all manufacturers and merchants list it as either out of stock, limited quantity, or discontinued, which is suspicious.
Here’s a mention by an environmentalist group:
Here is a more traditionally balanced analysis.
AI sources consistently reference these Growing Fruit threads:
I hate to wax political, but that’s where all discourse is headed anyway. Yeah, captan is tried and true. Yeah, it’s oversold by big-box retailers and overused by every gardener in the country. Yeah, it’s hard on fish. Yeah, it gives you conjunctivitis. Yeah, it’s less effective as time goes on because fungus is becoming gradually immune to it. Yeah, it’s a potential carcinogen in California. Yeah, there are better (more expensive) alternatives used by industry on various crops, but they’re discontinued, too. I can’t help but think that the control freaks are out of control and targeting citizens across their backyard fence.
I’ll be set for Captan for at least the next 5 years, likely 6 or 7. If I’m alive after that and can’t get it any more, I’ll figure out an alternative. Neighbors “reporting” me isn’t an issue.
From some further searching and reading, it looks to me like residential/non commercial growers are going to get pushed into using liquid captan. I see Keystone has 2.5 gallon jugs available. 4 lbs of captan per gallon. $105 per 2.5 gallon jug and $25 shipping ( to my location)
Call the nearest nutrien ag solutions. They can tell you for sure if captan is really discontinued or just a temporary supply issue. They probably have it cheaper than anywhere online also.
