I’m considering trying g890 rootstock for freestanding trees. However I most likely use a single stake. Does anyone have pictures of your 5+ year old trees on g890 rootstock?
I like my m7 trees but considering trying these for my new plantings since they seem more precocious.
Seems a lot of conflicting info on g890. Some say they are tall spindly things but maybe that’s if grown high density.
Planning to continue with 16’x22’ spacing so don’t want something too small compared to my m7.
First of all welcome to this site. Lots of good people and great help and advice here.
I have three G890 trees I planted this spring. I staked each one and will leave the stakes in for about 4+ years or so. It depends on how thick the trunk gets. I think that 16’X22’ spacing is fine. That is what I use as well. My M-7’s all all leaning so I have to keep them permanently stakes, unfortunately.
Hopefully the G890’s will not need that , so says all the info I have read about them and per the people at Cummins Nursery. Cummins says it is a free standing rootstock once it gets established in the ground, so 4-5 years.
They stated not to let the top get too big and loaded with fruit or it will be top heavy and snap off right aty the graft. So keep it smaller until the trunk gets thicker, if ever.
I have had some bad luck with some of the G series rootstocks not getting really thick and sturdy. I had four and took out two since the trunk was so puny. They were not G890’s though.
Too soon to draw any conclusions here in the Southern Rockies Z6a, but so far:
-
Well adapted.
-
Vigorous grower—-straight up if you let it.
-
Responds well to notching.
I plan to use it again.
