Apple Crisp

Nothing fancy here. Just tree ripened Crimson Crisp and a box of apple crisp mix and butter. Slices stayed firm enough to enjoy and the mix wasn’t overly sweet to feel guilty about eating a second helping.

Looks delicious. What apple crisp box mix did you use?

Whistle Stop. They also make a cobbler mix but I haven’t tried that one.

I really like Whistle Stop apple crisp product. That is why I asked. I have had trouble finding the apple crisp product locally. One small local grocery store used to carry it. They carry all the other Whistle Stop products. I have not tried the Cobbler version yet either. I like their Apple Crisp product so much I do not want to try it, lol. I had the cobbler box from them but never used it. When I looked at it I saw it was over three years expired. So I tossed it out.

I found it at an Amish market last year and reasonably priced at $4.99. I need to try some of the other batters like Fried Green Tomatoes and Onion Rings.

That’s a great price. If I look online the prices are all over the place, mostly a LOT higher. I believe that is about what I paid last year for the boxes I found. That stuff is great. Makes the fruit taste really good.
I agree, I should try some of their other products. Like their onion rings mix. I have not had enough green tomatoes to try that mix out, yet. LOVE some good fried green tomatoes.

Some of the recipes I have made as just so-so.

Apple crisp topping is easy to make, as mentioned above; but for me preparing the apples is the hard part of making the crisp. I use all of the early fallen apples (from Codling Moth damage) in crisps, and it takes a long time (despite not peeling the apples) to prepare 8 cups of chopped apples for a double recipe, modified from Joy of Cooking. But this extends the apple season considerably and lasts 4 or 5 days.

One of these makes short work of a few cups of apple slices

I also use the peeler/corer/slicer. I find that the key to success using these is to go fast and keep the momentum going all the way through. Stalling can cause the core to break and the peeler to dive into the apple too far.

The Pampered Chef version has the best build quality, but they stopped making them years ago. They pop up on Ebay and Amazon from time to time:

As for apple crisp I prefer the recipes with oatmeal. This one is good and simple:

Usually double up on the oats and cut the sugar and flour in half. I don’t do the topping on the bottom either… big pyrex dish full of northern spy, buttery crispy oatmeal topping, maybe a touch of broil at the end to give the top more color.

I bought one of those from Ace 2 years ago. Works fine for apples shaped the “right way” but no good on all the different oddball varieties I have. I just peel by hand these days. The Ace peeler is in junk box in the garage to probably never to be used again.

It’s no good on huge apples like Black Twig.
