Sugar Pearls cut open:
Hope this helps.
I would say no. That is definitely not a white apricot.
My one and only Lavina that survived the freeze. But it does not survive constant rain and cracked badly.
.It is surrounded by French I proved.
They are here!! - Oriental Fruit Moth (OFM).
This could be a second generation.
I was able to spray 3 times between petal fall and June 10. That would be in the middle of the first generation of OFM.
I have not been able to spray for over a month now because of frequent rain. And if it did not rain, it was too windy or my work was in a way.
Tippy, my Lavinia has turned yellowish now. I picked one today. It’s still tart, not ripen yet
I was pruning and happened to see one, usually yellow-orange.This was red.Best fruit of the year so far.
Most pictures of Lavina online showed the fruit with some yellow on them. I usually wait until they were all red before I picked them.
@IL847 - this one was hidden under lot of leaves and other branches. Without sun exposure, it has not colored up. This one probably will rot. Will have to wait for next year.
Lavinia is a heavy producer in my yard, branches are loaded. It is a keeper
Is it possible a Honey Pearl?
I don’t know if Pearl and Honey Pearl are the same. I have “ Pearl”.
I have to see which branch this fruit comes from. I think it’s Lavina. Among my Japanese plums, I only have a few. Got rid of most of them.
Why did you get rid of you Japanese plums, Tippy?
I have a French Plum, which I attempted to graft (3 times) with Bavay’s Green Gage. Needless to say I either failed miserably or BGG is not compatible.
I will try again next year, either with BGG or another variety that is compatible and suitable for our zone. I’m south of Boston, Z6b.
Marco
Japanese plums are simpler in taste. They are juicy, sweet (mostly) with tartness of skin and flesh near the pit.
Euro plums have more complex taste, less juicy, sweeter and even aromatic.
I don’t have a lot of space so I chose to keep Euro pears. I grafted a couple of J plums and hybrid plums I like such as Lavina, Laroda and Elephant Heart.
I have grafted J plums on E plums and vice versa. I grafted Bavay on E plums with no issue.
Your graft failure could be because of the quality of scionwood or technique than anything else. They should be compatible.
It looks too green even if shaded.
My Lavina are ripening now and are very good. Zero cracking. My French improved are 20% or so cracked now.
Uhggg… I feel for you Tippy, they are a pain. Whatever outbreak I experienced 3 or 4 years ago remains eradicated, but I still spray and trap to keep it that way.
Great question Annie. That would be my first guess as well for Bob’s mystery apricot!
@IL847 and @SpokanePeach
I did not know about Honey Pearl until you mentioned it. I had to do a couple of Google searches to find out that Honey Pearl is a nectacot.
No, my unnamed lonely plum cannot be Honey Pearl as I have never received such scionwood.
I went out to check the plum, an animal took a few bites of it. Look like it could be a Laroda plum. I f grafted Lavina and Laroda next to each other. Laroda is a very late ripening plum to me (when I grafted to another tree that was removed.
@scottfsmith - could that one plum of mine be Laroda?
Tippy, I am talking about the apricot you have. Not the plum you posted.
Annie,
Sorry for being dense!!
What apricot? My apricot tree (Tomcot) does not produce any fruit this year.
