My Sugarcane only sprouted about a week ago. Went in bareroot. I was wondering if it was alive. The Li I snapped the graft on (it was 12" tall and got stepped on) started growing from the rootstock at the same time.
I bought 3 tiny jujube trees from OGW, all three leafed out when I left, Empress Gee had tiny flower buds. I did give these trees a lot of my own compost.
Thank you all!! My honey jar has leafed out made my day when i saw the tiny leavesā¦ it leafed out in 1st week of July, it got really hot, humid here in Richmond VA. I appreciate all the feedback and the nursery recommendations
Glad to hear your Jujube finally woke up and got comfortable!
Iām growing āEmpress Geeā Jujube way up here in Western Washington and the central leader hadnt leafed out until about a week ago. I thought it was dead but it kept passing the scratch test. The new seasons growth started growing a while ago and just surpassed the central leader in size right as the dormant wood was waking up so Iād say Jujube is one that you need to be extra patient with considering about half my tree woke up on time and the other half just now decided to. I was very close to chopping the central leader back even with the cambium showing after scratching and Iām glad I left it alone.
This is the 1st time growing Jujube and I was certain that it was a goner. The only hope I had was that the central stem looked fresh and green. It all ended well
Iām not sure but I think my bare rooted sugarcane planted in Feb may bear some fruit its first season. I think I see some fruitlets on a few of the branches.
How exciting! that is pretty neat. I see some buds in mine, will wait and see.
My honey jar from Rain Tree leafed out 3 weeks after planting in early May but then kinda stopped growing. It still have very little leaves and never had the same grow spurt as my sugar canes. The leaves edges are brown and donāt look well. Iām watering it the same as all my other trees and theyāre doing well. Does the symptom looks like overwatering? or underfertilized?
Do you have any compost, give it some compost or mulch.
I put a 3" layer of mulch around it when it was planted, and then added some more mowed grass on top later over time, similar with all the other bare root trees I planted around the same time. The sugar cane from Womack Nursery in the picture got the same treatment and is doing well.
Itās not what you did, each tree behaves differently. I think I would try to save HJ. My ShangXi Li had similar problem and Iāve been putting mulch on it and water more frequently, now it seems to take off. I did the same with HJ and the leaves turning more green. I also gave all of my jujube trees a lot of compost last year, but who knows why only ShangXi Li had that problem. I remember asking about this problem in the other thread.
Well, the Honey Jar from Raintree looks like itās not gonna make it, the last of the leaves dropped. I checked Raintreeās guaranty statement and it looks like I have to submit a request by August 1st of the season that it was purchased, so I guess I missed that deadline. Strange, even Willis Orchard, supposedly one of the worst online nursery guaranteed their plants for 1 yearā¦they gave me credit for a Satsuma plum that leafed out and died 3 mos later. But Raintree only guarantee from the ship date until August 1st (I received my tree May 2nd). I donāt see myself ordering from them anymore.
Sorry to hear about your tree, this is why I avoid them, I bought lots of trees from ToA this year.
Thanks, I found more verbiage of their guarantyā¦
If your tree leaves out in the spring, and later dies while under your care, we will not issue a replacement credit. It is your responsibility to ensure that you order plants that will grow in your area and site conditions, and we can only guarantee that they will be delivered to you in good health. What happens after that is up to you.
I definitely will not do anymore business with them. The bare root honey jar from them was my most expensive purchase this year.
Most jujube tree sellers give you only until May 1 or June 1.
The solution to this problem is to always file a claim by that date, whatever it is. Most jujubes will not be leafed out or fully leafed out, so go ahead and file before May 1.
I am sorry the plant did not make it. Even though my HJ eventually leafed out, I was a bit surprised by Edible landscaping policy. They straight up refused to refund or send replacement. I had reached out to them within 6 months of buying the tree. Bought the plant in jan/ feb and reached out to them in June.
Ironically, Burnt Ridge has prices that could justify being very limited in returns support, they just canāt have big margins. One Green World has significantly higher prices.
this is exactly why I was so upset. the bigger place was most dismissive but could afford not to be
I did a post mortem on the dead HJ and the root stock was the problem. There were practically no new root growth since it was planted and the trunk was totally dried. The long branch of scion still showing some green when scratched, so Iām going to see if I can store it in the fridge it until next Spring to graft onto the surviving jujubes. I donāt have much hope, but itās probably too late in the season to graft now in zone 7A.
