Oh they might not be… sorry i missed that part
how do you all feel about grafting lime onto lemon(or meyer) or lime onto whatever the rootstock the lemon is grafted to? or vice versa, lemon onto lime.
these were helpful for describing the different satsuma varieties like size/flavor/ripening window:
I bought a bag of Sumo mandarins, that were smaller than those usually sold in bulk,at the grocery store. The flavor wasn’t as strong, like the fruit tasted before, which was pleasing to me.
The odd thing is,one had six seeds. It’s rare, that a single is found.I’m going to try and sprout them.
This is not the best time to buy Sumo. It tastes better later in the season.
Ram,I suggest trying that brand. This is my second bag from two different Safeway’s and both were similar.Very good flavor,in my opinion.
my trees have been in the basement in the mid 60s under a shop light. they havent defoliated but have dropped a few leaves over the lot. one of the satsumas(early st. ann) had its fruitlets die and i rubbed them off. the other two(kimbrough and owari 874) are still hanging on and getting bigger. so i guess thats good ![]()
what night temps do i need to stay above to consider moving them outside? i know they wont die but to keep them from stressing out. it would be nice to get them acclimated to sun and warmer day temps than they are experiencing in the basement. i think im going to move my figs out when we are consistently in the 50s or higher. would this be good guideline for these citrus as well, which include a eureka and persian lime?
when i potted these 20 days ago, i topped 2 of them to the height i wanted just above a “growth ring”. i dont see any buds pushing lower to form branching. it could be that it takes some time combined with the fact they are in an inadequate environment currently and they just went through a potting where their roots were disturbed quite a bit to get them from a tall tree pot to a shorter one.
wait, are these flower buds and not fruitlets?
actually i think there are new shoots forming where i topped them!
Where did you end up ordering from and what size came with flowers? I’m planning my next order…
https://growingfruit.org/t/madison-citrus-nursery-review/ they were all 1 gallons. i wouldnt bank on anything having fruitlets or flowers. kind of luck of the draw. it would make sense that plants that have sat around longer, less popular, might have a better chance
you can increase your odds by purchasing the larger 3 gallon plants.
Very cool. I got 3g kishu from them this year and it was loaded with fruit, and they haven’t dropped! Even after I forgot to bring it in for a drop below 40 last night. (I’m going to have to start setting alarms…) 1g Meyer looks far from flowering, but it’s healthy. I want some more citrus and your thread has been helpful!
They graft mature buds, so if you keep it alive and it grows fine it’s probably going to flower within a year.
I was just thinking about this - I have no citrus experience - and I wonder if there’s any relevance to you not having as big of a temperature and light swing from outdoors to indoors since you are further north and using a lot of natural light when shifted inside. Perhaps your plants are better adjusted to less intense light and not shocked by the change in environment?
Those are flowers, not fruitlets. Yeah citrus especially in spring will send a ton of new growth at nodes after cuts. Mine will do that up until about October so I try to not cut mine at that time of year to have less tender growth going into possible cold spells.
Fruitlets look like this. This is a calmondin/calamansi, but they all basically look the same at the start.
I think the reflection of light off the snow and my white vinyled garage gives them plenty of light in my south facing windows in the winter. by time i move them in for the winter, the temps out side are down to the upper 40’s in the day to mid 30’s at night so they are moving into a warmer environment also.
when do you move your citrus back outside?
late May. my Owari and Minneola are full of fruitlets right now.
im a bit warmer than you, are you going by overnight temps? id like to keep the fruitlets i have right now and any that set between now and when i put them out.
yes i am. normally i wouldn’t even think of putting them out before mid June but our weathers warmed quite a bit in the last 5 yrs so i just keep a eye on the forecast and take my chances. if i see a frost in the forecast i can throw them in the garage overnight.
