Best apple peeler ever!

So to be fair this is an unbranded one bought on eBay for $10.00
It’s the drill that makes the difference
It’s fast, as fast as you would want it to be.
I make a lot of dried apples ,and this took most of the work out of that project .
The only real trick to making one is the connection to the drill.

Cost
$10.00 for peeler on eBay
Hex nut $ 1.00
Drill I already had
Scrap wood
So $11.00

So here is the attachment trick,it’s a hex nut coupler. I think it’s metric.?
As shown in the below photo when the screw shaft is all the way in, there is very little sticking out to attach a drill to and its threaded . ( this is with the hand crank taken off.)
I put this hex nut coupler on there attaching the drill onto it, that’s the trick

What’s your best apple peeler ever ? ,!
Who has got em ?
Let’s see em.

Here is the Reading 78 peeler
It is the fastest hand crank peeler I have seen.
But. ,it only peels,. Does not core or slice.
For that reason I don’t use it much.
The one in my post above ( the drill) ,peels ,slices and cores and is faster.

Ok,…
Tuned up the Goodell-Bonanza Apple peeler today !
Not sure how old ? It is.
Looks to be not a day over 100 !
But not sure.
( they where made 1890’s- early 1900’s --? So…
Could be ? -~~ 130 yrs old ! … Bet a "new one " won’t last that long. )
After a squirt of olive oil here and there, a little sharpening.
She ran like a brand new one ! …amazing !
This was built in that age of mechanical Genius .
A time when people worked hard, and some designed brilliant machines to relive some of that burden.
(One could call those engineers the lazy ones
, of their day)

Anyhow this is a ;…

work of art
Mechanical brilliance
Really good to have ,if you process apples
Can’t find a new one as cool, and efficient.
A good looking thing on a shelf , in the off season.
Hard to find.and ^ $
( had to buy one for parts )
The best contribution of a very " lazy " engineer. !
And … Just fun to have !

It peels
It Cores
Kicks the peeled Apple off the machine
Kicks the core off the machine
Peels end up on one side in a pile
So …
You push the apple on
Turn crank.
You end up with a peeled apple with a hole where the core was. ( could stuff that hole with other stuff ? )
I put those" holly "apples in the oven
They cook fast , as the hole lets the heat get in…
Then ,… Freeze , pulp for sauce ,etc…?

Anyhow … Recommended !
Just don’t expect .that the "first one you buy " will run like new😀

And did you notice how tall that ladder / tree is !

Wish I had that crew to pick …! ! !
They may be too wore out to pick much today ?

Interesting, about 60 miles from the Geneva Research station.

:grinning: Gilding the lily, much?

My folks refused to use a lot of automation, preferring to reserve capital investment for devices that would save man-days rather than man-minutes. I, OTOH, am strongly attracted to these little kitchen gadgets like apple peelers. In fact, I wore one out. The nylon bushings on the main axle just disintegrated, and I can’t find anything with both the same inside and outside diameter, so I went out and bought myself a new peeler. Did I do the right thing?

That is one nice looking machine!

If you have a lathe, it’s real easy to turn a piece of HDPE to make a new bushing. Or use nylon, or even better Delrin. All very cheap plastics if you’re only buying a small piece.

Or do the easiest and fastest solution and just buy a new peeler. It’s a curse not being able to through things away that only need a small fix and then spending more time fixing it than it’s worth.
