Mara des Bois
My latest variety try… earli glow.
Berry flavor… excellent
Early harvest… yes… picked those April 27.
Disease resistence… not so good. Lost many plants to some kind of fungal issue (I think).
The leaves and stems and just turn brown and it sort of rots.
They may be better in a cooler/dryer climate… but have proved to be not tuf enough for southern middle TN.

Does anyone have reports on Benton strawberry?
My French wife is quite the chef, and follows a lot of the cooking fashions in France, and occasionally she becomes convinced that there is a must-have fruit or vegetable that she’s lacking.
The latest request from her is the Benton strawberry. It seems OWG carries it but is out of stock. I am curious if folks have any reports on this berry
I did find this one post on this forum; seems potentially very sweet: $50 Strawberries - #3 by cdamarjian
When they fully ripen in sunny, dry weather Malwina and Mara des Bois taste pretty similar. Both develop a very sweet, strawberry-raspberry flavor at their peak. MDB is a hint sweeter but lacks tanginess. Malwina has a gentle tang which balances well with the floral raspberry flavors.
They are my two favorite varieties.
I’ve grown both Charlotte and Mara des Bois. They both are very sweet/not tangy varieties (assuming they have dry, sunny weather and are picked at their peak). But they don’t taste exactly the same. Mara des Bois has more of a strawberry/raspberry flavor while Charlotte is bubblegum/watermelon underneath strawberry.
Charlotte does produce bigger fruits but I haven’t gotten very many of them. Mara des Bois is far more productive for me in all respects.
What do you think of Charlotte?
