Humid today… bad day for pictures but coming on the last of my Newberry… very Ruby colored flesh that stains purple.
‘Fall Red’ again…
Flavor notes- full bodied raspberry, nice and firm berry. This might be one of my favorite rasps yet.
I am really liking this raspberry. Harvest is probably just about done.
Old Description-
Our hardiest Ever- bearer is also the earliest and largest. Bears full crops after winters of -25°F. First crop matures in early July, second crop in mid-August. Berries are extremely large, sweet and an attractive red color. Select #1 plants. Zones 3-8.
All true except at my location they are mid June… probably early June for better zones and locations.
I have to repot all my berries…
The soil i got from g&b are killing my plants for some reason. I suspect it’s contaminated.
They’re growing great in lowes sta green and miracle grow so i think i may just stick with those from now on…
G&b soil is killing everything this year.
I have to repot almost everything i potted up earlier this year
Autumn Passion is a new purple rasp from the UK. It looks as if it favors the black rasp more heavily than the red.
Probably a matter of time before it filters in here to the US. I saw someone post pics of them on the social medias so that must mean early ripening as well.
2-3X the size of Jewel.
Fall Gold… my wife and I loved the fruit… but it was a weak reproducer here… lasted 3-4 years and died out.
Purple royalty and Joan J could not hack it here either… we had a drought for almost 2 months last summer and thise two and the bristol blacks I had all kicked the bucket.
I have nothing left now but Herritage Reds… they reproduce very well here and have outlasted all others.

Why don’t you water the plants during a drought?
And its a primocane variety as well
@Melon … I did water a lot last summer and into the fall.
The fittest survied… the others died…
We had some extreme heat with the drought too.

I busted up laughing at your sarcasm.
What kind of bugs are those? I’ve never seen anything that looks like them before.
I had them for a while. Planted it i think 2022 and got fruit in autumn already. Next year was plenty of crop too. I think I got fruits starting from August to Ocotber, but then the plant basically stopped growing and stayed very small (for the 2nd year now). Maybe it needs a bit more fertilization.
The canes are quite floppy and you need to trellis them or they are crawling on the ground.
Berries were quite large compared to my jewel. Good firm fruit, that tolerated rain really well. Taste was quite interesting, not very sweet, slightly tart and aromatic. It felt very different compared to my jewel and glencloe.
There’s another one, that I think got released last year. Should be the same breeder but thornless.
That is very similar to what I want to breed. I notice that they say it is the FIRST thornless Black or Purple Raspberry, may be in Europe but not in the world. All nurseries seem to claim that. They seem to be very insistent that they are properly sweet, they might be but I have my doubts. They are also probably very soft when fully ripe, something they did not mention. Still it is a very good breeding result.
I doubt they will end up in Australia, so I will continue my breeding efforts.
I did a video of my Thornless, Primocane fruiting, Purple Raspberry.
The fruit size needs increasing but it was a good first attempt. It was a lot more purple than the fruit in the pic. see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jERvF_qs57A
Awesome. Really love purples.
Wish you much success with the backcross to the blacks.
Just for reference, other new purple/black crosses that I’ve found in europe:
Megan, a remontant black rasperry.
Don’t know when it was released though.

Have it in my garden since this year, but I don’t have fruits yet.
Theres also HebanPBR (Black Polka) – in-vitro Kusibab
Had it some time, but died an ugly death due a month with long and huge rainfalls.
This bird has a black hole of a stomach because even when I’m outside, it feels like it’s always picking and eating nonstop.
How hot does it get at your location?
I am just curious how hot it has to get to wipe out Bristol and the others you lost. I am sorry for your losses, by the way.
I am happy to hear how resilient Heritage is though…that is one of the ones we are trialing.
How does the berry size of Jewel compare to Bristol and Allen?
Jewel is the largest and an offspring of Bristol.
Allen is a cross of Bristol and Cumberland.
Something to note i think is that most of the ‘black raspberry’ flavorings/jellies and things that are black rasp is or was ‘Munger’ which was grown on the west coast (highest US commerical production)… I dont think there is a ‘Munger’ or hasnt been for a very long time… it is Bristol.
“Recent genetic research on black raspberries has shown that the genetic fingerprints are identical for Bristol and Munger; in other words they are the same. In Eastern US we have always called it Bristol and on West coast they have called it Munger.”
snippet from the Bristol listing on Indiana Berry.
Thanks, It seems there is a lot of work being done around the world on Black and Purple Raspberries. I know Cornell Uni in the USA is also working hard on thornless, primocane, Black raspberries. Harvey Hall in NZ bred ‘Tahi’ thornless black raspberry in 8 years. I think I could get something I like in 5 years, because I started out with a thornless Black Raspberry, pure R. occidentalis, something which seems to have gone extinct in the USA. Ironic that one should turn up in Australia.
