Blackberries, Raspberries and Hybrids


Not Niwot from starkbros finally setting fruit after 3 years :star_struck:
The birds beat me to a bunch but it’s not very productive for the amount of berries… these are the floricane berries and they seem to only fruit at the very tip as well

Oh man, I hope my berry plants from Stark Bros are correct.

The Bristol’s put out really thick, bluish canes on new growth and last years canes are reddish colored and the berries are in little bouquet formation, on little stems coming off the main cane. I hope that sounds like how Bristol grows.

This is the first year we have berries from Bristol and a lot of others.

We have ollalieberries changing color, been waiting 3 years for ollalieberries! We are very excited. Our ollalieberry plants came from TOA, from when they were a 3-pack for a good price. All 3 canes are fruiting now.

Double gold has berries, heritage and Latham are making berries,

Berries are so wonderful, plants are not too expensive and so rewarding to grow and eat.

There were always one of the fruits that seem like they were expensive to buy if you bought the fruit from the grocery store, but the plant itself wasn’t that expensive.

Now it seems that way for all fruits and even vegetables

Just more inspiration for us to grow some of our own food.

The description of your Bristol caneberry growth and fruiting would be a good one for caneberries in general.

Growth and fruiting of caneberries varies by variety for the characteristics of cane color, cane diameter, fruiting lateral length, average number of berries per lateral, in addition to the obvious differences in fruit size, shape, flavor, etc.

Most of my cane berries look different to me. I can spot what is Bristol without looking at the tag.

Shocking light blue canes on new growth, redfish-purple canes on fruiting growth.

Enjoying the first fruit from my Bristol plant this year. It seems to be doing better than Jewel did with the above average summer temperatures and the fruit tastes good, although my wife isn’t sure if she likes black raspberries yet because the fruit is seedier than Anne, for example.

Hello again. I’m back!

Sorry. I’ve meant to post more, but there wasn’t much to say over the winter, then it has been a crazy spring.

As a newb who doesn’t know what they are doing, here is what I have wrought. I have a large deck attached to my apartment, which I have pretty much covered in berry plants. Thanks to @krismoriah for selling me some plants to get me started.

Considering this is year one and I’m just getting started, I’ll refrain from slandering things that I’ve grown that haven’t come out great. It could be user error.

However, I’ll sing the praises of things that have been awesome. Namely, Marion and Columbia Star Blackberry (they tasted pretty similar to me). WOWOWOWOWOW! Knocked my socks off. When @krismoriah above compared blackberries to candy, I was like, “C’mon, bro.”. Nope! These were like candy. At minimum, I’ll grow these moving forward.

I will slander one thing that I have grown. Bristol black raspberries. The seeds were intolerable. It was like eating a raspberry filled with little stones. I don’t have any problem with seeds in raspberries or blackberries, but this was bad. I’ve got Jewel and Allen, so I’m hoping at least one of the types will have “normal” sized/hardness seeds.

If Cornell is working on black raspberries (@Favman), then they should first work on the seed issue. I can’t see black raspberries becoming popular when they are 30% (maybe an exaggeration, but maybe not) seed.

The seeds in my thornless black Raspberry are not that bad but are more noticeable than in red raspberry. I think this is why most Black Raspberries go into processing. In the puple cross, Black x Red the seeds were not noticeable. I think if enough selection pressure is applied to make a Black with smaller or softer seeds, then it could be done. I suspect Courtney Webber at Cornell is working on this because he knows of the problem.

Absolutely tastes like artificial blue raspberry flavor and i love them. Actually thinking crazy enough to plant them in ground :crazy_face:

I’m looking into starting another business soon but i gotta get over the other side of fear first. I’ve started so many that have just been mild but I have another idea i want to start again that i think might actually work better than mild in the first few years lol.

Also want to start a nonprofit with it so that i can donate my excess which is already starting now lol. But only excess reds though. I’m already almost eaten all of my black caps.

Is it tahi? I love my not niwot but mannnnn the thorns are as bad as Constantine wire in some places.

I’m thinking of putting one of them in ground…

Whatever variety mine is seems to be early ripening. I’ve eaten 1/3rd of the crop already.

Not primocane as it grew around 15-20 ft last year until i cut them.

Died back in zone 6b for 2 years, produced in a pot in zone 8b.

Very thorny

Medium sized berries

Slightly noticeable seeds

I bought a potted Glencoe this year and it seems to be performing very well in my climate and soil. The flavor has a good complexity that is nice for fresh eating and will probably make a good jam too. It is also growing very vigorously.
The first Joan J primocane flowers will bloom this week, so it is looking like I may ripen a primocane crop while it is still warm enough to have good flavor.
The bare root Niwot is growing fine, but I doubt I will taste more than a couple of berries this year. Black raspberry seems to be the most common wild bramble in my area, so I am more optimistic than usual about its performance.

which of yalls rasp varieties do you have to corral? my anne seems to be the only one that isnt trying to grow straight up and one of its biggest canes broke under its weight.

I got ours from Stark’s too, labeled “Bristol” - I will post pics of ripe fruit, I noticed they are starting to turn black this morning.

The Anne I ordered on blowout sale from MIgardener in April, got lost in the mail arriving entirely dried out, potted and it managed to grow 3 little leaves and then abruptly die. Should I keep it around to see if it comes back? Still technically green to scratch, but, seems like a waste of a container at this point.

Apparently all my stuff is coming in really early according to my friends who live all over. My friends closer to Seattle aren’t seeing raspberries or blueberries yet even and I’ve had raspberries for about a month now. The last of my black raspberries are ripening now :sob: such a fleeting fruit…
