Blackberries, Raspberries and Hybrids

Ponca and Caddo i think are the wisest choices nowadays.

Late season means SWD and/or yellowjackets, wasps, stinkbugs and sunscald or all of the things involved in late summer fruiting.. if thats what you want to try then Apache will take you into August and Triple Crown will take you into September

Check out his post in Edible Ribes.

Here is the listing from that nursery.

If you want to try this nursery (which i think is a scam).. then that is up to you.. as they say they ship to the US.

I think a new blackberry will be released soon called ‘Ervin’.. from NC state. It is supposedly similar to Von..which i havent read much success about… but they say its widely grown.

They also state that its low yielding..which looks to be true from their marketing photos.

I have had the same experience with boysenberry; thin, wimpy vines and small tasteless berries. Bought the plants at Farmer’s Seeds (now out of business- I think purchased by Gurneys)

Be careful and look closely at all of the box store rasps.. alot of them are Wineberry. YMMV

Speaking of indentification, does this look like a loganberry flower? Never seen them before and looks different from a blackberry.

Has anyone seen bareroot plants at their local Tractor Supply store in the USA? I have seen some videos on YouTube from stores in southern states and California showing them but nothing in the midwest yet. For the past two years they have been in my local stores February 1st. Customer service doesn’t know anything about availability.

i will keep an eye out but none looked like wineberry at all to me, I’m pretty solid at identifying these things. wineberry is actually illegal to sell in my state so I wonder if theyre more careful? Though raspberry stem vs wineberry can be tough i suppose

We’ve got bare root plants in at the Tractor Supply here in GA. I stood there for 20 min telling myself I did not need an 8th peach tree. But I might go back :joy:

I keep calling them each weekend, but they haven’t got them in yet in my area in the Midwest.

Glad they are indeed available somewhere. They must be behind on updating their website because all I’m seeing are a bunch of red Xs and “not available at this store” when I search online in various locations, including the south.

I don’t see anything in the picture that would eliminate a (thornless) Logan ID.
The all-white flower and especially the leaf and stem structure are right.

Has this plant’s labeling or word-of-mouth ID been lost?

I just got it from Home Depot and are not the most trustworthy source. The flower also looked weird to me as it was very different than my blackberries and I don’t have an experience with any other cane berries. Figured I asked.

Wineberry where I am seems very distinct from raspberry. The wineberry I’ve seen have a fuzzy looking (reddish fuzz) stem.

And I have seen wine berry being sold at Home Depot as “heritage red”

interesting, i think raspberry sometimes has a bit off fuzz to it… though the raspberry i have is heritage red  but i got it from scenic hill nursery. it hasnt flowered yet which is when wineberry is REALLY obvious. Although I am looking at pictures now and they dont really look as alike as i thought.. hmmm im gonna have to investigate

Lets talk about wineberry. I like it. It’s not invasive in zip code 42544, in my opinion. Or just independent enough to have, with way less attention than cultured red raspberries. Tastes good, too. A long enough bearing season. Hangs in there in poor shallow soil. Really easy to get rid of when you are through with it , or want to move it.

Why is it so unloved?

I think must things from vigoro is mislabeled lol. I’ve seen wineberry sold as countless things from them and even plants sold being rooted upside down. Vigoro is usually the brand that is sent to big box stores in those bags and boxes

looks like black satin is making a comeback, it’s all over home depot this year (near Dallas)

also saw some hilarious misnamings, there was a raspberry being sold with a variety name of “RASPBERRY PRIMOCARIE”
