Buds Flowers and Fruit - 2023 Edition

@benthegirl
It seems like a Flat Wonderful peach. Here’s some flowers from pruned branches (they bloomed inside. Flat Wonderful tree has a really nice dark purple/ brown leaves which turns green during summer. My tree is from Gurneys, 14 years old. I believe it was grafted on Redleaf Peach rootstock (according to the info from Gurney’s I have on file). It’s about to bloom in Western PA, Pittsburgh area. It’s a heavy bloomer (and about 2 weeks earlier compare to Contender). If bloom survives late frost, it can set a heavy crop. 2 years ago branches on my tree snapped because of the fruit weight. This year I’m taking aggressive pruning steps to get tree size under control. My tree’s shape is similar to yours, just larger.

I kept some peaches and nectarines in pots, being inspired by @mamuang They seem to be flowering with my in ground trees. They were left outside all winter.

Beautiful. Mine usually blooms 2-3 weeks ahead of in-ground trees. I am in a colder zone so the differences between outdoor and indoor temperature Is quite obvious.

What sizes are your pots?

The round pot is 10 gallons and the square ones are 8. I like the square ones because they “fit together” with no wasted space if I have to drag them inside due to frost or winter storage in the case of my figs.

Where did you buy the square pot? I like the square one, can fit more pots in a limited space in the winter time

My Oregon Curlfree peach is opening a few feeble flower buds this year, the first since planting about a year ago. I’ve never grown peaches before, what does PLC look like at this stage of the spring flush? Is that why the flowers seem to not be fully opening, or is that normal for the first day of flowering?

@SoCalGardenNut … yes wild black cherries are edible… very flavorful… not super sweet.

They start off green… then red… then black when ripe. About pea sized and as you can see by the blossoms they hang in clusters.

I have several wild black cherry trees in my back yard with limbs that hang out and dangle fruit.

They do have small pits which i do not eat… and the leaves and twigs of WBC are poisionus… if livestock eat the leaves and twigs… it can kill them. Probably humans too.

The fruit is good to eat though… jams or fresh.
I have never had a tart/pie cherry… but i expect they taste similar.

This is what they look like when ripening.

PLC doesn’t really have noticeable effects on the flowers. That could be from the rain and somewhat cool temps we’ve had.Sometimes, when the leaves are just coming out, like those in your pictures,I can see a little deformation,if infected.

Well… finally got to go walk my hills and hollows again this evening.

Found a few…

Indian paint brush… may be a common name.

Devils urn.

Wild violet

Sweet william

A 3 prong fresh up… i put that seed in the ground 10 years ago.

Maidenhair fern… again fresh up.

Not sure what these are… looks like yellow blossoms on the way.

@PomGranny … there you go… trillium in bloom.

Last pic of the evening… Gerardi mulberry bud just opened… and fruit already formed. Cool.

@Happy1 … good luck with your plums.

I started two new j plums this year here in z7a.
They bloomed mid-to-late Feb… and set 100 tiny fruit… which got frosted-to-death a couple weeks later… turned black and fell off.

The leaves looked sad for a while but they have recovered nicely now. With j plums here… i am usually hoping next year is better.
