Nice pictures! Looks like your late freeze concerns turned out to be wasted energy.
Well judging by a lot of brown eyed (dead) blossoms, it did look like the freeze did get quite a few, but it looks like there is a pretty good fruit set. If we can keep the varmints off my trees, this could be our best harvest ever. I’m going to be vigilant about doing my sprays when I can also. We had about an inch of rain over the weekend, so I’ll have to hit the trees with more Surround today.
I meant to mention that my six year old Moonglow pear (first pear pic) has set some fruit. If all goes well, we might get something off this tree for the first time this year.
Columbine is blooming now. We don’t remember these being here when we moved in 20+ years ago and we don’t remember ever buying them. But they are all different, particularly the mult-petal one. Maybe there was dormant seed in some perennials or other plants people have shared with us over the years, that’s the only thing I can think of.
First fruits of the season. The varieties are Black Pakistan, White Pakistan, Himalayan (DMOR9) and Four Seasons. Four Seasons was not good but I hear the next crops are better starting summer. White Pakistan tastes like melon and almost too sweet. Black Pakistan and Himalayan are very similar and good. If I just had Black Pakistan, I wouldn’t miss others.
This bird-planted/volunteer strawberry that came up last year and has since spread into quite the patch is in full bloom now:
Hoping for some tasty fruit! The “tower of jewels” (Echium wildpretii) is continuing to put on its show, and the hummingbirds have found it finally (but haven’t been able to catch a photo of them visiting yet):
Do you deadhead columbine or are they pretty self sufficient? I was just given contradictory instructions.
Hi all…growing season is in full gear so I’m back!
Just wanted to share something I’m excited about. This will (hopefully) be my first persimmon flowers. If I’m not mistaken. This is the first flower buds I’ve ever seen on my now somewhat big persimmon tree. These flowers are on Nikita’s Gift branch…,
Got some red gem goumi turning red… and getting more strawberries too…
My mulberry graft… going to have to move my bird perch up some.
That is one strange looking flower! Cannot wait to see the fruit.
Strawberries under CHE tree… working nicely. The end of my food forest bed there faces south east… getting nice strawberries on all sides.
Anyone else growing strawberries under fruit trees ?
In my case there both are thriving… CHE is loaded with fruit this year… strawberries doing very well.
i have Galletta under my red gem goumi. control your runners though or they will quickly choke themselves out and stop producing.
That is a beautiful color! What is the name of the peach?
Not sure. I got a cutting from a friend. Yes the bloom is beautiful. It is not very hardy to Chicago’s winter but this winter had no very cold temperatures dip so most of the flower buds are still alive
