I bought a red fruited pear tree from Miller’s Nursery in Central NY several years ago ( 6 or 7 ? ). The tag blew off soon after planting and I neglected to put a new tag on it. It finally fruited after 3 or 4 years and I could not remember the variety name. So I inquired at Miller’s Nursery which was now owned by Stark’s. They informed me that they none of the sale records even though they had me on their customer list so no help from them.
The tree is dwarf and has easily been kept to less than 8’ with lots of fruiting spurs. Blossoms are more red than white. The fruit are good sized and mature about the same time as my Bosc. Like Bosc they require ripening and keep quite late in the fridge. When ripened they are very sweet and juicy. The skin is a little bit tougher than a Bosc but sweeter than a Bosc. Tree has been disease and pest free so far.
This tree produced well over a hundred fruit this year. Here is a picture of a typical fruit. Anyone got any idea of what this variety might be.
Whoops I bumped the wrong key. I was trying to say that I have seen green ones in stores. Would red and green varieties taste the same? If so I will get some green ones at the store for a taste comparison.
It looks similar to regal red comice https://www.dalival.com/poires/regal-red-comice-en/. See the slightly lighter striations running through the pear. How does it taste? See this thread to try to identify it further https://growingfruit.org/t/what-pears-will-you-grow-this-year/20412 . Consider grafting backups and giving scion cuttings away to friends when you prune it. It is becoming rare unfortunately like most red pears. They are falling out of favor. In my opinion it is a little dark for red anjou and does not have enough vertical striping as shown below. Red anjou is a great looking pear but not as pretty as the pear you are growing https://produce/pears/red-anjou-pears
