Candycrisp apple dying?

I found my Candycrisp apple looking like this today.

Various cracks in bark of the trunk running vertically lower down.

Is the damage on the southwest side of the tree?

Wow, I have never seen this before!

I have seen this before but never knew what caused it though.

I wonder if those green dust things are a fungus or if they are a eriophyid mite. You would need a 100x microscope to check it out.

Perhaps bag it up and take the sample to the State Extension Agency. See if they can help you.
