Captan Alternative

Back in my in my introduction post I asked about spray schedules for Peaches and Apples. It was suggested that for Apples I apply Captan/Spinosad at Fruitset 2x/Mo and Peaches Captan/Sevin at Shuck Split and then 1x week for 4 weeks. Then every other week til 2 Weeks before harvest.

I’m having trouble finding Captan available in smaller quantities. 2.5 gallons will last me many many years of spraying. Unless this stuff stays good for a very long time, I would be wasting it. Is there an alternative I can use? I have Bonude Fung-oil with chlorothalonil. But it says don’t use after shuck split.

So unless Captan stays good for many years, is there an alternative I can use?

Captan 50 and Captan 80wdg are dry, 50 I believe is powdered, and 80wdg
is water dispersible granules. I’ve heard the powder is difficult to mix in, the granules are what I use and they mix in nicely. My preference is always a dry formulation that can be mixed on demand.

Check into some hardware stores. I found a few small containers of powdered Captan there. I agree with you Captan is getting harder and harder to find.

I may just have to break down and buy the large quantity. Most places that still have the small bottles you have to pick up locally. The domyown is sold out and no longer available.

The wettable powder lasts longer and is cheaper.

There is a new product available. All Phase Preventable fungicide by Circadian Crop Sciences. Organic. Extensive research available on their website. In powder form, small quantities. Used it for the first time this year and NO peach leaf curl. You might want to look into it.

Captan is available from Chemical Wearhouse in 30 lb bags or a small bag, not sure what the size.
Ive gotten both captan and ziram in 30 lbs from them.
Good prices.
Ziram would be a good alternative for you too. And it also comes in a small bag.
Any mancozeb product is great but has been restricted somewhat of late. This would be manzate, dithane, others. Only for use through bloom due to extreme phi. Very effective though.

Oops. Sorry I missed that. I was more concerned about whether they would ship to IL. Spring stock-outs on captan aren’t unusual. Often, I can’t get it either by the time I go looking online, but, typically, I can find the 12oz WP on the shelf at my local Farm Bureau Co-op, which doesn’t keep an online catalog that amounts to anything.

The myclobutanil is available from DoMyOwn.com, however.

I have the granules, too. I caution readers not to combine the dry granules with sticker/spreader. That results in a gummy mess that won’t dissolve. Instead, soften the granules with plain water and make sure they are completely in suspension before adding sticker/spreader.

I have copper fungicide, fungoil, and Immunox. I think I’ll just use what I have this year and attempt to get some Captan or an alternative for next year.
