They both produce really well. Decent but not top tier flavor.
I am grafting Saijo this spring and Dar Sofiyivky.
Hopefully Saijo taste better with my southern heat.

Interesting. My first Coffeecake have been flavorless, as have my Saijo. But the Saijo were only a couple, deformed, and ripened unevenly. Haven’t had a real crop yet.
Coffee cake is one of the best. So far my favorite PVNA. I think it has more flavor complexity than Mikatani Gosho but that graft is still very young.
Dar Sofiyivki is supposed to be very good. Second only to Nikita’s gift.
Looks like you changed your mind on Saijo. Perhaps just surpassed by others?
I’m very awkward at searching the forum, but I see elsewhere you suggested somebody use search when asking about Chuchupaka, so I tried and came up with above
It was very good many years ago. For some reason it has been mediocre more recently.
I even did a video many years ago describing how delicious it was!
I did not change my mind. The fruit just got worse! Meanwhile Jiro which was bland then got very good.
@ramv – Is there any chance that your taste buds have changed, due to age or Covid or who knows what?
@jrd51 , I think that is unlikely.
Yes, it’s very strange that the Saijo got worse. The tree is much larger but fruit neither looks as good nor tastes as good. I am grafting over Saijo this year.
Meanwhile other trees are much much better.
Sorry, I don’t have a good explanation for this.
All we can ask is that you share your experience and insight. Appreciated, thanks.
I almost threw mine out yesterday because i thought it was dead from the roots.
Turns out, persimmon roots are black…
They’re in the Ebony family.
Yeah i had no idea. Only saw a bunch of tiny white roots beginning to poke from the black so i had to Google it and found out
Sorry no Cardinal here, I hope I can get a scion of this variety to try out in my location.
Whoever Saijo is one of the best persimmons here on the east coast!
Ruben – Glad to hear it, though your location is a lot warmer than mine. I have two young Saijo trees, one in a pot and the other in the ground. The potted tree was intended as a backup in case the in-ground tree is killed by the cold. So far, I’ve gotten a decent crop from the potted tree, while the in-ground tree focuses on growing. I thought the Saijo were very decent, especially for a small, young tree. Fingers crossed for the future.
Joe
They are so good I have 5 in the ground!
Good luck!!!
We have a long hot season here… dont think Saijo will have any problem being the best tasting of my Asians… I have IKKJiro and Cardinal.
Now will Saijo compete with (hybrids) Nakitas Gift, Kasandra, JT02, Journey, Dar Sofiyivky?
Not sure about that.
Looking forward to finding out.

I don’t have Cardinal.
I haven’t taste Nakitas Gift, Kasandra or JT02 yet but I don’t think the hybrids will compete with Saijo flavor wise. (I could be wrong but that’s just my gut feeling)
My little Cardinal persimmon is off to a good start this year with new growth.
It ended up last season only 17 inches tall.
Looks like it is going to do some serious growing this year.
On Saijo…I have a graft of Saijo to one of my wild dv rootstocks that is looking good so far.
And 3 grafts of Dar Sofiyivky that are looking good.
I had some board members from the south east assure me that Saijo is going to be a very delicious persimmon grown with southern heat.
I transplanted my H118 persimmon from my current home location… to my new home orchard this winter… it has some buds swelling and green now. It is a little later than my other persimmons… but does look like it is going to make it.

I think you would see your Cardinal take off this year!
You will not be disappointed with Saijo!
I hope your H118 would pull through.
Best
Ruben
I’ve only gotten a couple of fruit off of my vigorous and healthy Saijo and they were very disappointing. Hopefully it just hasn’t settled in yet.
I’ve gotten only a few Nikita’s gift, but one of them was really excellent. On par, or nearly, with H118 without the bitter skin or off flavor. I’d also had Nikita’s Gift fruit from One Green World years back and they were quite bland. Probably picked real early or something.
