I planted 33 chestnuts and so far we have 11 little tree sprouts coming up.
I would have liked to buy a tree, but it is extremely difficult to find people that will ship one to California.

I planted 25 and only 9 have sprouted so far.
Plus 1 black walnut and 8 pecan trees with some jujube sprouts on the bottom.

You’ll probably need to seek out nurseries in CA or on the west coast. California is chestnut blight free. Nurseries in blight or potential blight areas won’t ship to blight free areas.

When did you plant your chestnuts?
April 10th.
I planted ours on May13th.
When do we officially give up?
There is a tree frog that hangs out in one of the pots every day. He/she loves getting watered too.

Also, I didn’t hear about the float test till after I planted them
Maybe I had a bunch of floaters and didn’t know it.

That makes sense, but I still didn’t find anyone with trees in California.
I still think more will sprout for me, so I’m not sure when I’d suggest a cutoff time. I didn’t float test any of mine, because with me I’ve seen some floaters still sprout on some seeds, albeit a extremely low percentage did, and everything was in a mass planting in my air pruning bed.
Okay good, I will keep tending to them and I just spotted a 12th sprout.
One has 3 sprouts coming up off one chestnut, what’s up with that?

Some of mine sprouted then the top withered to the ground then resprouted as two.
Interesting maybe some of them just have back up plans

They came from a mix of chinese and hybrids.
Also I have a few other seperate hybrid seedlings that are supposedly 3/4 american and 1/4 japanese.

Most likely the three sprouts are branches from a main sprout that died. It is easy to overwater chestnut seeds and that can cause fungus that kills the sprout.
The other thing that can happen is certain cultivars are prone to purring more than one kernel in a nut — twins. It’s not considered a desirable trait in chestnuts. I got five hazel seedlings from three nuts this spring.
