Chuchupaka Persimmon info request

I had ordered a Sophie’s Gift persimmon, but the supplier was out and offered me a Chuchupaka as a replacement. I happily agreed as it looks like an interesting cultivar.

I have read that it may need a pollinator? Can anyone confirm this? Will an Asian persimmon work as a pollinator?

What time does this variety ripen?

It does not need a pollinator to my knowledge. But I have many Asian pollinators so I don’t know if mine held on only because of pollination.

It is an early variety. Maybe Dar Sofiyivki is earlier but chuchupaka is earlier than all my other fruiting hybrids. It is also atleast as cold Hardy.

Thank you ramv! How is the quality of the fruit in your area?

First year for fruit! In other words I don’t know yet.
According to many reports, it is the sweetest persimmon.

Anyone else have experience with this variety?

I belive @SMC_zone6 is one of the few in the US who have fruited and tasted Chuchupaka so far. Most folks just have smaller trees that aren’t fruiting yet.

I did have it confirmed by a Ukranian grower that it does not need pollination.

Honestly I would just get it.

It has large beautiful fruit. There are no guarantees that Dar Sofiyivki is actually better.

The fruits I’ve had so far have been great. It ripens late October / early November for me. It’s definitely a tree I’m glad to have.

That’s good news! I was skeptical of the claim of needing a pollinator, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little worried.

Beautiful productive variety. It’s still year 1.

Ramv, any update on the fruit from chuchupaka this year? When did it ripen, quality, etc? Were you able to compare it to Nikita’s gift?

For the record, I did plant it in the orchard this fall.

I posted lots of photos on other threads. Please use the search function to find thrm.

Short summary: it’s a winner. It is earlier than Nikita’s gift and Kasandra. Very good quality persimmon.

Hi Ram
That’s a very nice looking fruit and tree. Your Chuchupaka is fruiting for the first time and my Cardinal as well. This year I was amazed that it yielded 25 fruits and held them until ripening. About how many did your tree produce? I think it would perhaps make an interesting cross with Cardinal. What do you think? I put three in a bag with vodka on Tuesday, on Friday we will taste one to check astringency. They are still very firm but most foliage left in the wind night before last. So I may gather remainder before freezing weather.
