Citrus 2025

I’m finally able to focus on my fruit trees after a couple of years of neglect. They’ve shaped up nicely after being battered by my home improvement project.

Blood Orange. This tree came with the house so I’m not sure which variety. The flavor is intense and color is a dark red, not too sweet though. Goes great with the sweet Mandarins that ripen at the same time. Ripens around January and hangs till April.

Tango Mandarin. No fruit on this tree yet. I planted the original tree close by but it died due to circling roots. That’s the problem with potted trees that you cannot bare-root. This one looks to be doing alright in its second year although only one fruit on it so far.

Shiranui/Dekopon/Sumo Mandarin

Up-potted from a 5 gallon container to this giant pot I’ve had from @girly since forever. I did a horrible job training this tree which I grafted on C-35 rootstock. It grew lopsided because of the tree above it. I don’t have the heart to do a hard prune on the heavy side since it has so many fruits.

Grafted Shiranui to the left half of this lemon tree.

Navel Orange. Planted by the previous owners, this tree sets loads of fruit reliably and it hangs from February to June!

Amazing collection of citrus bleedingdirt! You know I gotta ask…if you can only have one…maybe two citrus in your collection, what would it be? For us it’s definitely the shiranui/dekopon.

A lot of my trees are young and they haven’t developed their full flavor. But my absolute favorite is the navel orange which gives A+ grade fruit for many months.

Fair enough lol! For us we are growing citrus all in containers, so the one that gives the most fruit each n every year get the most love! In ground, it would make sense for the navel orange! You ever have any scales issue with your citrus?? If so how do you combat them?? I spray permethrin on my kishu mandarin for scales and I think it was the cause of all of the dozen of fruits to drop…

Scales are an issue for my Lime tree and that’s because I have a ton of ants in my yard. But they stay away from all of my other citrus so I don’t bother. Only other pest really is citrus leaf miner but that is a minor annoyance.

Wow, your garden looks amazing!!! Gorgeous house and yard!

Great citrus collection! Keep us posted on how your Sumo and Xie Shan satsuma turns out. I definitely plan on coming over next spring for some citrus tasting

In my yard the gold nugget has been absolutely fantastic. The clementine, Xie Shan satsuma and pixie have been great too, but Kishu, Shasta Gold, Sumo and Owari Satsuma have not been good. But I’ve tasted some Satsumas from @fruitgrower and they were the best ever!!! So may be the rootstock / water / growing conditions all play a part… Tango was awesome flavor but not sweet enough for me.

I replaced my Washington navel with Cara Cara and its really good! Worth adding!

I’d say wait a couple of years, if they are young trees. I’ve heard it takes a while for Citrus fruit to start tasting to their true potential.

How are they fairing for you? Do you like them?
