For fireblight? Bosc and klapp’s favorite at least are pretty susceptible, but I’m not sure how high the fireblight pressure is in your area
Make sure you thin those Asian pears pretty aggressively
I don’t know what fireblight risk I have here, I guess I will find out.
So far so good.
Maybe I should spray them with copper?
Dragonfly, dry climate is not so bad for fireblight.
I have all on Phlogopite’s list except Josephine. I’m nearly up to 100 pear varieties currently. I potted up about 25 rootstocks yesterday and will pot up at least 25 more this weekend.
I know the Harrow series blooms late. Which of the other ones are late bloomers? It’s hard to find that information out on the less common pears.
Larger pears that are fireblight resistant is not an easy question. You might be best off with these in my opinion.
European pears
Warren
Potomac
Maxine
Luscious
Shenandoah
Karls favorite aka Ewart
Duchess D’ Angoulme
Large seckle
Bell
Harrow sweet
I want to mention that i like ayers very much. Clarks small yellow pear is hard to grow but is disease resistant and fireblight resistant. I enjoy korean Giant and Drippin honey very much for asian pears. Tyson is excellent like seckle but both are tiny. They are smallers than ayers which is not a large pear.
Harrow Sweet is in full bloom here at my house. It is an early bloomer maybe group 2. Kieffer finished blooming 3 days ago and it is a very early bloomer. Ayers is already past peak bloom. Winter Nelis is in full bloom now and so is Lucky Pittman’s Very Late pear. Warren is still a week or two away from blooming.
Thank You very much. I quickly reseached all of them. Large Seckel I couldnt find much info on but the others seemed to hit the mark. I have a Shenandoah already.
Please keep me in mind if your going to offer budwood later this year or scions next year.
Thanks again.
J, do you have your rootstocks already? If so, you may be able to get some scions now. I have scionwood of Warren, Potomac, Maxine, Shenandoah, Duchess d’Angouleme, and Harrow Sweet in the refrigerator and have offered them for trades. I have the others as scions to graft this year. I have a tree of Bell but have sent out all the scions I was able to collect this year.
Yes sir I have OHXF333 rootstocks that I’m going to plant this coming week. But I could hold them back to bench graft then plant them. I dont have anything to trade this year because of 17 and 13 year plus annual cicada craziness last summer. My trees took a big hit. I would be more than happy to purchase them though, if you have venmo.
Will cost you postage which will probably be $12. PM your address and I’ll put them in the mail early next week. You can either mail a check or paypal the postage.
Here is a little more information on the seckle , large seckle aka giant. Dont overlook the seckle family of pears. That is where warren and others come from. I grow several several variations. One of my favorites is one i got from @39thparallel . I enjoy the seckle fruit very much that grows in my orchard. It is one of my favorites for flavor. That large one is excellent. I planted an entire row of those pears. I actually might have done 2 rows after eating those fruits last year. They were exceptional and larger than ayers. Similar in appearance to ayers but with a deep rich sweet flesh that i would rate very highly. I called Mike the second i ate one ripe off the tree. I said you know that rare Seckle is exceptional. He said yes it seems pretty good like i said. I wish you guys all lived down the road @JesusisLordandChrist . Small seckle is also good just like worden. None of those pears are large seckle. I thought i was looking for an extinct pear for a long time.
Do I recall you saying Giant Seckel is more blight resistant than small Seckle?
