Clark's Crabapple

@Richard

They look close to ripe.

I taste tested that apple today, and one farther below. They were over-ripe :joy:. Well at least they do ripen here. Looks like I’ll have a learning curve!

That sounds like great news overall!

my graft was one the last to drop leaves and the were very colorful compared to the tree it’s grafted to which was more brown leaves and earlier to drop them

I would have said it looked over-ripe but I didn’t want to contradict Clark on his apple! :joy:

I think the Kansas sun is a little hotter, which gives them just a shade more yellow color here. This is one of those things we find out as we go, i think. The cold fall nights really concentrate sugars here. All that said, i never tasted a peice of fruit better than that from California. It is the ideal climate in every way.
Richard lives in the ideal location for any type of fruit. I’m honored my small apple rated a spot in his yard. I’m very glad they grow in such a warm zone! Fantastic news! The fruit below was not sprayed.

Every time I see pics of Clark’s crab it makes me want to grow it more. I hope I have better luck with my grafts of it this spring.

I can talk grafting for hours, but please remember this one word: Parafilm!

Been using parafilm for over a decade.

My Clarks crab graft took in spring of '23, it just isnt growing much. Hence my hope for better luck this spring.

Rootstock ?

Wild apple. That could be the issue, or at least part of it.

its been slow to grow on my b118 rootstock i grafted 5 of them on as well.

Maybe not. It was local wild crabapple, or feral landrace apple?

Wild apple plug sourced from the U of ID. I do not know their seed source(s) but would guess they aren’t from truly “wild” apples.

I’ve got a spare m111 or two, as well as some local wild (truly wild) crabapples that I’ll be putting Clark’s on this spring.

One thing I ignored about Wickson is that it can be rain tender and damaged. How is the skin toughness on Clark’s?

@dannytoro1
It had an eight month hang time here. But I can’t speak to rain damage as we only had one or two 1/4" rains during that period. In fact I’ve been irrigating weekly since the end of last Spring.

I grafted five scions on two existing trees and only got about two inches of growth from any of them. So I don’t think any of your rootstocks are the problem. Maybe it just starts out slow.

What grafting style did you use? It sounds like there might be a little cambium between the scion and understock which is interfering with formation of a solid sap flow.

Three bark grafts on one tree and two I think clefts on the other tree. They were existing established trees, so the grafts should have launched. I’m also not the only one with that story.
