you might have a hard time ripening it there as it barely has time to ripen here, but your days are longer than mine so it might suprise you. good luck!

Awesome, I look forward to the results. After all last winter Fairbanks hit a little more than 10 degrees colder than Vermont gets at it’s coldest, while Northern Maine hit 10 degrees warmer than Vermont’s coldest that same winter

Comparing Fairbanks to anywhere in the contiguous U.S. isn’t wise.

Yes, that’s the only reason I’ve hesitated. Kerr is about the latest to ripen up here; we’ll see what happens.

That’s true. minimum temps aren’t the only factor; duration is significant. I remember one winter when the high temperature didn’t exceed -40 for nine continuous days, and the minimums were sub -50. Last winter was the coldest by average temperature (-13.6), but not by low temperature. I live at elevation, where we have a temperature inversion that makes it warmer, but even so it hit -63 at my house back in ‘88, and lower in the valley. Fortunately our winters have been getting milder, and the growing season longer too.

Have you ever tried grafting Clark’s Crab on to Callery?
I was thinking about what the most vigorous Rootstock for it would be and I wondered about that.
Also a full sized seedling rootstock might be amazing, but what disease resistance would we hope the Rootstock would contribute for ideal health and longevity?
Clark has stepped away from participation in the forum. Hopefully he will return at some point.

I’m personally going to graft it on a seedling and see how it goes. It will likely be years away but I’ll report back later, the seedling just germinated earlier this year. I’m planning a multigrafted seedling too but CC seems to require all the vigor possible so that will be the sole graft on that tree.

Which is why I put CC to Bud118. At 80-90% standard, that should give it a boost. If I had Antonovka handy I’d try that.

I heard there’s a problem on Antonovka, (was it low fireblight resistance?) I’d like to try on other seedlings like Northern Spy or even better, NovaSpy which is much more fireblight resistant, maybe an Enterprise apple seedling if they have good roots.
