Clark's Mulberry

I am far from an expert but that looks more like a blackberry/raspberry. There appear to be bracts, all mulberries I have seen have a short stem.
I hope they are successful in finding and propagating true red mulberry. I too would be interested in one. Every mulberry I find locally are white… I think, but then again that looks like a blackberry to me so what do I know.

Ugh. That is absolutely a bramble of some description and not a mulberry, much less Morus rubra.

You’ve got to get out of town to find M.rubra, for the most part. I’m located about 4 miles outside of the city limits here. Driving farther away from the population center, I could easily point out 100 pure M.rubra trees growing in fencelines or at woods’ edge alongside rural roads on a 10-15 mile drive. There will be an occasional hybrid - the ‘Lawson Dawson’ ortet is about 10 miles from my house - but most of those rural mulberries will be pure M.rubra.

I did an image search and it looks like its on twitter, facebook and all kinds of social medias…as folks are sharing it in Missouri etc.

The picture appears to just be a stock photo in Adobe which was probably found by whomever was told to create the media info… they were just too lazy to fact check… well actually everyone was too lazy to fact check i guess…or even more probable that not many folks even know what a mulberry looks like let alone care.

So i will fact check it for them… to my eyes its an immature blackberry of some sort… that even has iron chlorosis

Good luck to the folks hunting for them.

Several people are waiting for wood but i am going to delay one more week. The 4th of July holiday will close many things at 1 on wed. The temperature here is 95. Those green scions in a hot mail truck wont end well. I think.im better off to delay since shipping is pricey for the people who wanted scions.

Mulberry cuttings would be liquefied if i shipped them in this weather. I had the cuttings cut once already as well. Shipping is too expensive to waste everyones time and money. I ordered some cuttings that looked and smelled like garbage when i opened the package. I ate the expense. I’m sure they were ok when they shipped them.

Clark. Do mulberry cuttings for rooting need to be active? Could I take a fall cutting, root it and protect it overwinter for spring planting? Basically keep it from going dormant.

@Shibumi

Sure, they root cuttings year round. Some people prefer late fall especially for ribes like gooseberries.

Question, both of my Clarks mulberry cuttings started a few weeks ago are flowering. How do I handle this? Just brush them off?

I would cut the flower buds

I tried rooting some Gerardi cuttings several years back. One month on bottom heat in the dark .. and another month in a sunny south window.

Once moved to the south window buds broke.. leaves and fruit came out and sized up some.. then a week or two later they started to decline and died.

I checked for roots.. and there were none at all… In near two months.

All that growth happened from energy stored in the scion.

Some mulberries root easily. Gerardi is not one of them.

That is the downside to this mulberry and Clark’s Crabapple they fruit very heavy. Establishing them can be a challenge because of that.

Well, I’ll take them off and keep hoping for the best. Maybe I’ll move them to the warm and low lit garage. I guess if this doesn’t work out, I’ll need to buy it again next year along with rootstock and graft it. Received Gerardi yesterday that I cut low and threw the sticks in a pot. No loss if they fail…just a few less things I have to worry about giving away.
