Hello everyone I found this on the internet and would love to have large sized blueberry, could anyone guide me where I could find information regarding them or maybe trees
Two large berry,Northern Highbush are Chandler and Darrow and they should be fairly common to find at nurseries.bb
Patriot are another one that has really large berries.
Herbert is another large berry. An old variety.
Nourse sells all these varieties (except Herbert), they are a good source of just about any kind of berry plant.
Could you attach a link ?
I ordered 1,000 strawberry plants form Nourse once…did the best of any strawberries I’ve grown.
I understand blueberries from tissue culture don’t grow as well as from cuttings…but someone my correct me. Nourse does the test tube thing.
(But, at least they won’t have diseases when you get them.)
I’m not sure? But can say you should get huge 2 years old plants. I know Indiana Berry sells 2 year plants that are decent sized for about 8.50 ech. I bought two blueberries and 2 raspberries this year and postage was 10 bucks, My total was 33 dollars postage included. I have bought from them before and got huge plants. Nourse too.
Indiana Berry is by far my favorite nursery for berry plants. Nourse makes you buy 3-5 plants sometimes. Not with blueberries though. You can buy one. You have to buy 5 raspberry plants. One is good for me, they sucker, easy to propagate, you don’t need five! So I usually buy raspberries from Indiana.
Here’s another place that I found earlier this year that sells blueberries. I’ve never ordered from them before, but prices seem really good. https://finchblueberrynursery.com/
I put an order in with Indiana Berry for next spring. I ordered some blueberries and other plants.
I bought four blueberry plants from Indiana Berry two years ago. They were decent sized plants. Unfortunately, two died last year and the other two aren’t doing too well. The soil isn’t very good, although it’s quite acidic. I blame the soil (amd my lack of amendments), not the plants.
I have had mixed results with IB plants. I bought two gooseberry plants from them two years ago, they were tiny little cuttings with barely any roots. Not surprisingly, one didn’t last a year, and the other is smaller than my other two GB, planted at the same time.
I’ve ordered about 15 raspberries from them over the years, and out of 5 the first year (2017), one is still around. I ordered 10 from them the next year and 7 are still going. Not too vigorous, but still alive. Rasps seem to be harder to get going here, compared with blackberries.
Their blackberries have done very well, they really took off after planting two years ago. The main issue with them, tho, is that they’re not all that hardy, particularly Freedom and Osage.
That’s not very encouraging. I ordered some gooseberry’s too. It said they are two year old plants. I hope they’re in better shape than the ones you received…
If not tell them you wish to return. If plants are large and healthy looking you can’t blame the plant if it fails. I have had raspberries arrive that were dry as a bone, but they lived. I find them hard to kill. But it just may be they like it here? It’s not easy finding what works best in your area.
I’ve ordered blueberry plants from both Indiana Berry and Finch Blueberry Nursery without any problems. Both provided healthy, bare root plants that acclimated well without any loses.
My most recent order was December, 2018 from Finch for 6 plants which were planted in late January, 2019. So far all are doing great.
Since you are in zone 5, go with Northern Highbush types and they will do fine as long as you provide the correct growing conditions. If you’re not up to speed on growing blueberries, I highly recommend reading up on it before placing an order.
I’ve bought Blueberry plants from Hartmann’s Plant Company in Michigan, with good results.
They have at least the big one,Chandler.bb
I’ve heard that cuttings from gooseberries or currants don’t have to be that large to get going, but these didn’t have hardly any roots to them.
That same year, I ordered a Jeanne GB (along with 3 tart cherry bushes) from honeyberryusa, and it was much bigger and had a good root ball on it. It is about 2ft tall and 2ft wide now. It produced a few berries last year.
My wife bought me an Oregon Champion GB from Tractor Supply, one of those ‘berry in a box’ plants. I wasn’t expecting it to do well, but after a couple years it’s about 4ft tall and 3ft wide. So, go figure.
Ironic as they are known for small plants. Still a good place. I have ordered from them a few times. And yeah the plants were small, some even died. I know they are a small family operation so I just ordered them again. They seem to be growing enough to get bigger plants these days. With Indiana berry some teenager probably packed a small sucker. They would have replaced it if you bitched. Rolling River sent me 2 red currants once when I ordered black currants, they quickly sent out the right plants. All of them are still alive. Last year I traded gooseberry cuttings and got Invicta. A large white-yellow berry. The plant is supposed to be prolific too. I might have extras in the spring. I know more than one rooted. If they survive in my garage over winter? I also rooted Jahns Prairie. It has a few thorns at the base but as canes grow they are mostly thornless, nice!
Travis, thanks for the link to FINCH blueberry nursery. I’ve heard of them for years, had a catalog years and years ago…it was real simple in black nd white with just a few varieties…seems they’ve hung around and done well, looking at their website.
I my give them an order in 2020.
They have berries from the NCState University breeding program that I’ve never seen nor heard of. Their southern highbush seems to include berries for the Carolina’s where Rabbiteyes do well…as opposed to new varieties that would work in Florida or Southern Cal.
(But it’s logical that NCSU would be breeding for the locals.)
Someone asked the question on another thread what blueberries would work well in SW Missouri. Answer probably would include these new NCSU cultivars.
(And speaking of large berries, I forgot about Blueray. Not the prettiest plant in the row, but a tall gangly plant with big leaves and very big early berries.)
I mentioned DiMeo Farms earlier as a source of blueberries. They have 4 year old bare root plants for pickup (In New Jersey, not Maryland as I may have stated earlier) at $10 each.
And 3 year old plants ready to bear in 2020 via mail-order for $10 each with a minimum of 5.
This compares to 8.75 for a plant from Nourse Farms that are 1.5 years old and half as big.
For folks near I-65 in KY/TN there is Bluegrass Blueberries near Bowling Green. I know little about them, only that they are pretty close to my area.
I’m glad I could help. If you order please let me know how they are.
