I planted a row of heirloom apples early this spring. Now i’m begining to plan a modern disease resistant apple row to be grafted on MM111 RS early this spring. Nothing huge I have room for just 15 trees. Could you please respond with your favorite varieties, for me to research.
Reading around here it looks like PRI 1994 Pristine release is popular amonst the community.
I have been growing Liberty and Enterprise for almost 40 years. I love both, for different reasons. Liberty is a great multi-purpose apple, dessert and cider, if allowed to fully ripen. Enterprise is a delicious and distinctive dessert apple, though its skin is tough.
Edit: I should add that among the Purdue releases I also have Sundance, which I’ve not been able to fruit; and Redfree, which has performed well but it is not as vigorous or tasty as either Liberty or Enterprise. Redfree is very early (Sept) whereas Liberty and Enterprise are Oct/Nov respectively.
My number one pick would definitely be Enterprise. I’ve tried about 100 varieties but very few have grown as easy and vigorous as Enterprise. My growing conditions have been tough, so even varieties like Gold Rush, Pristine and Liberty have been hard to grow. All my Gold Rush except one were killed off by CAR but Enterprise seems to be completely immune. I struggled with Pinova only to have it die after three years. When the root stock sent up a sucker, I grafted Enterprise on it. Two years late it has grown into a six feet tall on the exact same root stock in the same location. There are a lot of good varieties, but if you want one that is easy to establish and has great apples, then try Enterprise.
Bear in mind that I have not tasted these varieties, only just planted them. But my research yielded:
GoldRush
Golden Russet
Arkansas Black
Nova Spy
Liberty
Snowsweet
Sweet Sixteen
Sansa
Winecrisp
Did I mention Goldrush and Golden Russet? They’re widely considered some of the best varieties available. So you might consider getting two each of those.
I’m just starting research on all the suggestions.
Pristine and Enterprise are cross pollinators. I’ll add a 2 Pristine and 2 Enterprise to the row. 11 more to select.
I have a lot of eastern red cedars that I would like to keep. ERC is valuable to me around the farm. But but ofcourse Cedar Apple Rust (CAR) is problematic. I seem to have it under control with spraying.
Golden Russet is a pollinating partner for many other disease resistant varieties. If you scroll towards to the bottom of the page, Cummins will give you a list.
My Enterprise were hit hard by fire blight a couple years in a row. They’re fine now, but they were close to being pulled. One of them lost the central leader at the top and I had a lateral tied up to replace it for a season. It’s still getting re-established. I’ve also found the Japanese Beetles really like them, and Liberty as well.
Monty’s Surprise is my #1 suggestion. I also add or second others suggestions: Liberty, Sundance, William’s Pride, Galarina, Bonkers, Keener Seedling, King David (from Century Farm Orchards), Mary Reid, Enterprise, Clark’s Crab, Chestnut Crab, Devonshire Crimson Queen, RubyRush, Hollow Log, Guyandotte Pippin, Yates, and almost any Limbertwig variety.
Pixie Crunch seems to hold it’s own pretty well. It’s scab immune. It does get CAR but while in a bad year I see a lot on the leaves, I don’t see it on the apples much.
I don’t see FB on it either but we don’t have the same FB pressure as others.
Goldrush, Winecrisp, CrimsonCrisp, Topaz, RubyRush, Story Inored, Smeralda, Pristine, Sundance, Triumph, Cosmic Crisp, Bonita….
There’s a ton of VF scab resistant varieties coming out. Even some red fleshed ones
Remember to get trees with overlapping bloom and with different purposes.
I have not had many of the varieties I planted, since none of them bloomed this year, but i have a few that seem promising. Here are some less heard of ones.
NY 75414-1 “stars” " Midnight" “Early Macoun” is a cross between macspur and liberty. I didnt have many mac type apples so i picked this one up and its scion has set many flower buds this year. Ripens late september, with Liberty.
Hawaii- yellow/ red streaked apple that is a bit more tough than pristine, though it is a later harvest like early October. Golden Delicious and Gravenstein cross, supposed to be more like Golden.
Freedom- like liberty but appearently does better in moderate areas while liberty does better in hot summer areas.late september mac type apple.
Wolf river- gigantic apples. It is ok for fresh eating, but not that crisp and doesnt keep crips for long. Excellent for baking though. Ripens mid to late september.
I have also thought about getting a green apple that is disease resistant. There are some like greensleves, canopy and Smerelda but i dont have enough room for more trees. At least that is what my wife tells me
