I think its been awhile since anyone has had Charlotte in stock… someone else asked the same question a month or so ago.
I dont think that any of the links you provided other than Gurney’s or their sister site has had them for a very long time… and Henry Fields hasnt been in business for a very very long time…
So not sure if that information was gathered by AI but its severely outdated.
I have them going and will be allowing runners to make more…in case they disappear from the market. Mine are not mutants but true to name
I saw that current 2024 article and questioned some of it but still quoted it. Henry fields was a sister to gurneys. I thought maybe they reopened after going out 5 years ago. I see it with nurseries all the time.
Well this isnt the place to discuss it…but Gurney’s, Henry Fields, Breck’s, Spring Hill Nursery, Stark Bros, Michigan Bulb, New Holland etc are all just storefronts now… All have been sold and dissolved and all under the umbrella of Niles Kinerk…who cleverly markets each name under the same roof.
I dont think there is a real Gurney’s or Stark Bros… anymore… as they are all combined.
2001 as far as i gather was the end of Gurneys and Stark as they once were… as they filed for bankruptcy and was sold.
Perhaps all of this information is incorrect but interesting at least.
You brought it up a couple of years ago but perhaps forgot.
I think i bought my Charlotte from Garden Solutions? Which was one of those spinoffs.
I am well aware for sure and brought it up because people should know who they are dealing with. Henry fields can come back in business with a snap of the fingers. Many things are like that @krismoriah. As a side note even though they are under the same umbrella michigan bulb is often cheaper. They are also out of business. They say"Shuts down after decades in business"
Starks is not gardens alive.
right. Gardens Alive bought Starks and sold it. And now Gardens alive is Gurneys as far as retail goes…but still the owner of all the other companies.
In 2001, Gardens Alive! acquired more catalogs from the assets from direct marketer Foster & Gallagher who had filed for bankruptcy. Gardens Alive! spent $10.75 million to acquire Breck’s, Gurney Seeds, Henry Field’s, Michigan Bulb, Spring Hill Nursery and Stark Bros. Stark Bros. was immediately sold off.
Brown and Abair bought Stark Bros from Gardens Alive.
So full circle… some of the Niles Kinerk owned businesses list Charlotte Strawberry…whereas Stark does not.
Perhaps Charlotte will no longer be carried by Gurneys then marketed down to their various resellers like Home Depot, Walmart, Amazon etc. Or maybe they will all be back in stock soon… nobody knows.
Once things are gone from Stark Bros they usually never come back… if Stark doesnt do good with them they move on. At least in my experience… lots of things folks talk about on here that they bought from Stark a long time ago are nowhere to be found now. (Illini Hardy Blackberry) and other Stark Exclusives.
Maybe Charlotte is gone from the trade now too… it does have a lot of new competition.
Thanks I tried most of those and they are already sold out.
I have been growing Strawberries for years, and always with some good varieties, but somehow mine never get very sweet and many have a bit of bitterness to them.
Perhaps not enough sun?
Even so, getting lots of berries now. We are making some great shakes and jam with them. They work perfectly in shakes, just ok though for fresh eating.
Besides Charlotte is their another variety that would be good??

John,
Sweet Charlie might be worth considering. Isons offers it and they will be opening up ordering soon for fall strawberry plugs that ship September/October time frame.
Thanks for the advice on Sweet Charlie.
Besides choosing a good variety of Strawberries, is there a secret to growing full flavored sweet berries that aren’t sour/bitter?
