Dry Mid Atlantic weather

Yes looks like MD, didn’t get much except those places closer to DC and along Chesapeake Bay.

Below shows totals for today 5/29/23, per wunderground reports.

Yes, after my earlier complaints about yesterday’s meager rain we got almost .9 today which was a nice surprise.

It didn’t come far enough north, I got nothing. We did get lots of rain a few weeks ago.

Here’s a nice summary from NWS of last 30 day rainfall.

I’d be in that orange shade in southeastern Kentucky. Not a problem yet, really, but if it gets hot and precip. remains on the shy side,
it’ll become a problem later in the summer.

Got over 1/2 inch yesterday.

I could use such a half inch about now.

ICON model thinks something may be passing through whole Mid Atlantic East coast next Mon 6/12, so hope you get your wish soon.

Thanks.

I dumped the last of my little rain barrel on the the blueberry bushes. My hope is that it is re-filled tomorrow.

Looks like it is time to play rain roulette again. The weather underground prediction for the rain today here in Arlington has gone from over an inch, slowly drifted down to .3 by yesterday, then jumped back up to .9 when I checked first thing this morning, and now has drifted back to around .4.

@zendog Yes, it looks like this storm is only light rains on average for VA. Hope you get hit with one of the lucky spots.

For me, I got about .2 inches yesterday. Not expecting much more.

Yes, I have my fingers crossed but we’ve gotten skunked plenty of times before. It looks like the next chance of rain is about a week away and that doesn’t look like much either.

Having to water all the time is definitely a pain, but I worry more about our tree canopy. We’ve been losing a fair number of oaks in our area due to ambrosia beetles, etc., which happens when the trees get stressed. My neighbors on both sides have lost their oaks and I lost one of my three a few years ago.

The newest prediction is .08" so not looking good. I need to stop looking and just go out and water.

1/4" forecast for my area. I hope we get it. I broke down and watered the dogwood in my front yard yesterday. Last year the dry and heat beat it down so I’m doing my best to show it some love this year without going overboard. I wonder how much El Nino will shift things as the hot months move in. Heat alone or heat and moisture. So far we’ve been cool and dry.

There’s no place on earth that has ideal rain all the time. What’s more there’s no place that isn’t above or below normal at times. And the worse normal is the more variable rainfall usually becomes.

Around here, 12-15 inches per year, a lot of people complain about the lack of rain. My thought is well then move someplace where it rains more. It’s dry here and sometimes it’s really dry. We’ve had two 24 month periods in the last 20 years with 2-5 inches total…for 24 months. Suck it up or move. Nature is what it is.

People like it here because the humidity isn’t as high as points east. Right now our dew points are in the 30s. Just east of here, where it rains more, dew points are in the 70s and it’s 5-10F warmer to boot. One has to take the bad with the good.

Today I am fortunate. I think we have gotten at least a half inch and I am hoping for more. The blue berry bush rain barrel is full again.

You see that little red spot in VA? that’s where I am!!!

@benthegirl Yup there’s a rain shadow where you are.

Are we going to hit the rain jackpot this week? My forecast calls for rain to start on Wednesday and then on and off rain and scattered thunderstorms for days. Looks like we could get 3” or more. It will be a relief not to have to water every day.

On the other hand I’ve been amazed how the lack of rain has kept my tomatoes free from blight, septoria, etc. It is quite amazing how they are pretty much pristine.

Looks the same for me. Although it looks like it’s going to be convective activity, it looks like several days in a row of it, and pretty widespread, so by the end of it, most of us should get a decent amount of rain.

I think I was lucky enough to get about an inch and a half of rain over the last week. On Saturday I hit the orchard with fungicide (and triazicide) hoping to get ahead of the summer fungus spectrum.
