Looks delicious, Ram! I had DK and a couple other “ breba specialist” varieties for a bit but eventually discarded them. A little difficult for me to prune and manage for breba only and have them be annually productive. Granthams Royal made some impressive ones! Do you have that one, I recall it does well in PNW.
I really like the varieties that make both breba and early enough maincrop. Verdolino has made some of the best breba for me this season so far, and thanks it’s traits it’s easier to let them get really ripe.
Maincrop figs won’t be coming for a few more weeks so it’s quite nice to get some breba now.
@manyasfigs25 … I would be interested in RDB for sure. Possibly Florea… (or which ever is the earliest).
I can handle rooting them. I have done a few of those.
I have only grown figs in ground here and it is a little trouble to protect in ground figs over the winter… so I am not all that keen on having a bunch of them.
I think 2 or 3 would be max for me.
Appreciate the offer for fig cuttings and your red mulberry. We can talk more about trades this fall or winter.
Thanks
I have Granthams Royal. Actually 2 giant trees and a smaller one that’s been grafted over.
I usually get a nice crop but this year was pretty bad because we had a cold winter that killed breba. What remained were ruthlessly pecked away by crows. For some reason crows really have gone after GR this year.
I’ve had Verdolino for a few years now but it’s been a slow grower. I thought it was my rootstock that was the problem and started a few cuttings. They are growing slowly as well.
I guess there are a couple versions of it? Mine came from VR and I guess it did take a year or two to get going but has been steady growing since then.
Little Ruby is a simple figgy sugar bomb but is super early and very hardy. Had no die back for me. Our first fig to ripen this year in ground in 7a/b. I hope Florea and IC will be sooner in the season next year, but Little Ruby is underrated. It is a very heavy continuous producer, also. My “dwarfs” are pushing 5ft tall this season. This is second season in ground. We have three, growth is vigorous on all. This is my “dwarf” fig corner, turned into giant bushes. ![]()
It was a bonsai like super producer dwarf in a container. Flavor is much better in ground. This is from Aug 6, 2022
Every time this thread cycles up, I hear in my head “Fig in the North! Fig in the North!” a la Game of Thrones.
Haha! I hear it! Husband and I love that show…,
Breba season is winding up, one feature I like about Kesariani compared to other Mt Etna types ( like Hardy Chicago) is that it sets breba, my plant made a good bowlful
When does it ripen? My breba varieties are just wrapping up and no main crops are close for me.
Albo is the earliest variety for me. It overlaps with late breba producers.
RDB and IC should be very closely following Albo. Within a week at the most.
Does anyone grow Little Miss Figgy?
I got one in spring, but when I look online the info on hardiness differs. As does info about it’s other names. (LMF is apparently a new market name.) I’m planning to propagate it next year to have back-up for in-ground planting trials, and keep this one in a pot in an unheated house this year.
Not breba??
I checked again. Definitely main crop ![]()
It usually produces a breba too but this year there were none. Maybe because of the cold winter.
My Ronde de Bordeaux are still pretty small. Similar to my Violette de Bordeaux main crop. LSU Tiger are probably a little bigger. This is first crop for RdB in 3rd leaf since transplant.
I grow little miss figgy, mine is very hardy, but no figs again this year.
I had no dieback in zone 7a/b
Its dwarf version of VDB
Thanks! That’s what I read before getting it. I’ve been reading a lot of contradictory info since.
First Albo main crop. Delicious!
Several more are starting to swell too. This variety is much earlier than RDB and IC.
