Fan-Stil Pear variety information

Hi all,

Anyone grow the Fan-Stil Pear from DWN? (I believe originally it was LE Cooke)

I would love to hear some feedback on this variety.

I planted it in a marginally acceptable climate (coastal san diego) but Im hoping that the listing on the DWN site as “below 400 hrs” means that they have no idea or no evidence that it wont produce below that number. DWN seems to have that happen often with their apple varieties… or on varieties that are listed as “below XYZ” and not a hard chill number. But maybe that’s not a good comparison when you jump to a different variety of fruit. Not apples to apples comparison?

Thanks so much!

Sean

I have grown this pear in two locations in Central Texas (zone 8B). I grew it on a previous property and made sure to plant it again after I moved to my current home. It was originally developed by John Fanick out of San Antonio. It’s a fabulous variety and extremely fire blight resistant in my experience.

Excellent. Thanks for the reply! Did you get it bare root?

I planted one a year ago. Dave Wilson bare root. Supposedly it’s a LeConte w better fireblight resistance. Leconte is a good pear here.
