Alternate leaves vs opposite leaves…good catch!
I know my bloobs
at least, I’d like to think i do.
Stop and press send before you type out a long ass reply because it’s too early in the morning
Note that cross-pollination and hybridization aren’t the same thing, and the existence of seeds means it was a successful pollination not a successful hybridization. From a very broad (and possibly incorrect) definition of scientific names that I was told, any species with the same genus name can cross-pollinate each other (but not necessarily hybridize). The only reason why figs naturally don’t cross-pollinate is because of the wasps.
I am not saying they didn’t hybridize, but I wouldn’t call them hybrids until they exhibit traits not seen in the mother plant. At any rate, I do hope you are successful in making hybrids.
I really don’t want to go outside right now cause I’m cozy in bed, it’s a Thursday, and i have social events i don’t want to be apart of today HOWEVER!
That’s a persimmon leaf you’ve photographed.
and why is the fruit coming from the back of the leaf supposedly? I could be wrong but it screams persimmon leaf to me or some sort of house plant that i don’t know anything about. But definitely not the variety of ficus that you’re claiming
the founder and owner of ourfigs decided to sell the forum without 1st consulting the forum leadership. was this his prerogative? of course, i’m not disputing this. but clearly several leaders were unhappy with his decision so they left to start their own fig forum. was this their prerogative? of course, i’m not disputing this either.
scott is not going to be the owner of growingfruit forever. this is a given. maybe he already has a plan in place, maybe he doesn’t. but for all i know, the next owner may want this forum to generate more revenue, so they will plaster ads everywhere.
with categorization by demand there would never be any need for random ads like we see everywhere on the bonsainut forum. if the demand is the greatest for a tomato category, and you want to promote your topsy turvy tomato product, then clearly you’ve come to the right place. just start a thread extolling the virtues of your product in the tomato category.
it would be great if scott understood this. just like it would be great if he understood fig hybridization. but my educational effort is mainly directed at the group as a whole. i want to be a member of a group that understands that fig hybridization is useful, and that economics is even more useful, since it’s the greatest facilitator of everything good, including fig hybridization.
one thing that is really important to appreciate is that this forum’s existence is largely, if not entirely, determined by donations. if scott randomly decides to remove the cider category (again, his prerogative) and people stop donating to this forum entirely (again, their prerogative), then would scott shell out enough money to cover the difference? maybe. maybe not.
but since it’s already the case that donors have the responsibility of largely deciding whether this forum itself should exist, then why can’t they also be entrusted with the responsibility of deciding whether a category on this forum should exist?
just now on facebook i took a couple seconds to very easily and freely create a public group for fig and ficus hybridization. what’s the difference between a fig group on facebook and a fig category on this forum? the differences are minor. i know a lot of people love to hate on facebook but there are countless people who participate in countless plant groups on there.
here’s facebook’s fatal flaw. it’s easy to see how popular a plant group is, but we can’t see how valuable it is. this would change if fb used donations to rank groups and sorted search results accordingly.
if growingfruit did rank categories by donations then it would destroy facebook. growingfruit categories would essentially become groups and nobody would overlook the most valuable ones. that’s the key. this is the internet’s revenue model of the future. it’s definitely not going to be ads. it’s definitely not going to be paywalls or subscriptions. it’s going to be using donations to make group decisions.
@Olpea I think it’s time we just moved this whole thread to the Lounge or About This Forum.
I’ll start a fresh, new threat that’s actually about hybridizing fig species.
I think he’s poking blueberries with syringes and stuff… I don’t think there are any serious attempts here
look at the screenshots i just posted.
When i was about 10 years old, i used to do similar things like what he’s doing in an effort to gain trust
post fake stuff and say I’m doing research on neopets… then i hacked about 50% of the entire population and got almost everyone mass banned when they (neopets) found me out
as soon as they rolled out the membership pay to win stuff. fun times. Do i feel bad about it? Kind of because i lost some decent human beings that were my friends at the time. What do i think of it now? … i hacked one of the most popular websites at the time at 9 years old while convincing most of the richer Neopians to trust me with their info. I was a genius but short lived due to bad parenting and poverty.
the blueberry was an obvious joke. i did try using carica pollen on my real ficus vaccinioides but no success. there was only one fig and maybe it was too mature. but so far it does grow happily grafted onto carica…

regarding my aff heterophylla, this is the same plant…
i don’t think it looks anything like the real heterophylla…
I don’t know if ephiphyte’s photo is actually Ficus heterophylla or not, but it’s definitely not a persimmon. It is a Ficus of some sort though.
The google result you got for your search of 'ficus aff heterophylla" is actually a picture of a Magnolia, probably M. figo or compressa, not a Ficus. I’ve noticed a recent trend of google pulling up images for plants that are completely unrelated to what you search for.
Dam. Got me there.
And now it’s a joke when the blueberry thing has been caught
i sowed the seeds of the mother ficus next to the seeds of the offspring. the seedlings are remarkably different, thanks to the offspring having carica as their father. hopefully the hybrids share their mother’s resistance to nematodes and their father’s relatively large fruit. but most likely back-crossing, if possible, will be required to produce the perfect fig for florida and tropical countries.
Love that pumila graft! So weird looking, sort of like mistletoe
Epiphyte, do you know what type sycomorous is behind the balboa park botanical building? If I remember right there is also a smaller one behind fleet museum
do you mean the ficus vaccinioides graft? i imagine that some really artistic stuff could be done with interspecific ficus grafting, but unfortunately i’m not very artistic.
i haven’t been to balboa park in a really really long time. if you get a chance to snap some pics of the sycomorus leaves and figs perhaps we can figure out its id.
hopefully we can find someone in the area with a ficus sycomorus tree in their yard that we can try to cross-pollinate with carica. mike fons (figfair) has a sycomorus (shikma balami) tree that is hopefully pretty close to fruiting size. it’s parthenocarpic but i think i vaguely remember hearing that this trait can only be passed down by the father. in any case it would be great to figure out sooner rather than later if sycomorus can be crossed with carica.
my crosses so far…
ficus opposita x carica
ficus fraseri x carica
ficus ulmifolia x carica
ficus racemosa x carica
ficus aspera x carica
ficus lutea x carica
ficus sycomorus x carica
