some of these are a few years, some are first year. all have fruit on them! just not ripe yet. here’s hooping for sure
I think you’ll see tons of production next year if you move them into much larger pots. All of the cuttings I got this year (over 10) I put into 15 gallon pots. All are now around 4 feet tall (not including pot) and all at least made figlets. Something isn’t quite right if they’re that small and a few years old, unless they’re from tissue culture or something.
A really nice Paratjal Rimada and some in-ground ripened Malta Blacks were the fig highlights of the weekend.
valle negra vs vdb how are they different ? how do they compare?
I think they are slightly different.
They ripen at the same time. Both are very sweet and extremely tasty. Maybe two of the very best varieties I’ve tasted all season.
Valle Negra seems to have a slightly darker interior. I’ve seen this on multiple fruits. Slightly more berry flavor. It is a small but consistent difference.
I would not get one if I had the other. There are too many other great fruits to waste space growing very similar varieties of figs.
We lack summer heat here in the PNW, so my 9+ cuttings this year (all in the ground) are only about 6" tall, the tallest maybe 1 ft, and my only fig from a cutting last year is less than 2 ft tall. So I think that may be a big part of the “something isn’t right” for @resonanteye – our regional climate doesn’t grow figs quite as quickly as many other parts of the country.
There is some truth to this. But I’ve managed to coax about 6-7 feet of growth from cuttings rooted in winter. You need an excellent microclimate and lots of water/fertilizer.
Hello, it’s my first post. I’m from Spain and I’d like to share some fotos of my local varieties (without name)
The White one produces breba and figs , and the black one just figs.
I have seen your fotos and they are so beautiful!!
Breba
Figs
Wow big figs! Congratulations!
Wow! Those are HUUUUGE!!!
Your fig look wonderful.
thanks to all! it’s a shame we’re so far away to share cuttings. I throw them away every year.
Preto and yellow long neck. Both are delicious, my wife really likes the refreshing nature and size of longneck.
I have both in pots, side to side. I was very surprised to see that both are identical. Of course the plants are still small and no figs yet. But the leaf shapes and even the colors are just identical.
I believe they are very similar. But this is only the very first year.
I do not really want to compare top growth. We all have different growing conditions.
Sure the main difference is soil and fertilizer. If you use rich compost and a lot of animal manure, you can probably get to 5’-7’ in the first year.
Some use weekly chemical fertilizer too.
I’m planning to fertilize in early spring pretty heavily, about half are in the ground in the hoophouse now, and the rest will be going in there in spring. I’m hoping that will help with size!
Wow, thats insane! November?
They are done here after our weather suddenly turned. Its 10-15F below normal and expected to hit freezing temps this coming week.
I had a couple of light frosts but the olympians i have hanging on yet seem to he ripening. The weather has been rather warm the past few days here.
