Fruit varieties with “long hang times / long harvest times”

Hi,

First time posting….

zone: Northern California / Santa Clara / 9b

I am looking for fruit varieties with “long hang times / long harvest times”

What I have with long hang times:

  • Mandarin: Gold Nugget [harvest May-Jun-Jul-Aug]
  • Pluot: Flavor Grenade [harvest Aug-Sep-Oct]

Any recommendations for Figs that would have a 3-4 months harvest times?

I realize “hang time” is not the right concept for fragile figs.

looking for “figs that ripen over many successive weeks, providing a long harvest window”.

rather than 100 ripe figs in 1 week, prefer 10 ripe figs, per week, for 10 weeks

Long hang times in the usual meaning does not apply to figs.

There are several varieties that take a long time to mature.

Our VdB has staggered ripening.

Hi Richard,

not “many months to mature, then harvest all in a week”

but hoping for "ripe figs to harvest, every week, for multiple months

There are a few dozen apples that are known for “everbearing” harvest times. From a few weeks to more then a month sometimes.

Great for trees at home.

I find I can leave blueberries on the bush for a fairly long time. That may not be the case in warmer climates. This assumes bird protection, of course. Rhubarb would be another. And aronia.

Citrus such as navel oranges can hang for over a year.
Your best bet for high “hang time” as you define it is citrus of various kinds. Figs don’t qualify

Not sure if you can grow them in NorCal, but avocados have what feels like an endless hangtime. Mangos also have a pretty large harvest window.

You could also graft different varieties of figs that have different ripen times (or just get mutiple if you have the space). There is at least one variety of fig that ripens more or less each month, would just have to research and plan. You could also apply this same strategy with most fruit trees (multigrafts are very good for extending harvest seasons).

I’ve had aronia hang till the following spring. i left some for the birds but they don’t like them.

Avocados definitely have a long hang time.

Greg Alder in San Diego has a blog “How long can Lamb Haas avocados hang?” which says 6+ months after ripe

They are waiting for the giant ground sloths.

Hi Richard,
thank you for some new learning – I looked it up – avocados evolved for dispersal by ground sloths!

I’m just getting into them, but jujubes should be able to hang quite long as they can dry on the tree

Kumquats can hang on tree for 3 months after ripe.

For apples, Pink Parfait is amazing that way. It seems to ripen and then store on the tree like it is in cold storage for a remarkably long time.
