G.214 brittle graft union

Had a Wickson 2nd year tree snap at the graft union. Which was swollen. And oddly disturbed internally. Like callused bark and streaks of healthy tissue.

I will try to re-graft the top onto other rootstock.

Think I’m just giving up on Geneva period.

Sorry to hear that man. I have like 30+ trees on G11 that I grafted whip and tongue that are 2-3 years old and I’ve never had a problem. A few of them are even in a poor draining location. I don’t have any other Geneva but I have nothing but good things to report on g11. I also have m111, antonovka, bud9, and seedling rootstock and no problems there either. I have a fairly windy sight and the dwarfs are staked with tposts.

I have not had good luck with Geneva series rootstocks, so far. I had a two (2) of the G202 and two (2) of the G11. One each of the rootstocks were puny and sickly looking. The one G202 is runty looking and only started producing a decent amount of fruit two years ago even though it has been in the ground for 10 years. The other G202 is a nice sized tree and has been producing fruit for about 7 of the last 10 years it has been in the ground. Like direct opposite results with the same G202 rootstock. I did take two of the 4 G series rootstock trees out. They just did not look good and were awkward and sickly looking. They are planted in the same area, 15’ apart.
I did plant a G969 and a G890. The G890 was the only rootstock available for an apple variety I wanted. So I thought I would take a chance on it. The G890 was sent by mistake since that was the only rootstock they had since I wanted a M111. They substituted the G969 rootstock for the M111 they ran out of. So I will try them.

Brittle graft union complaints seem to be very common on some Geneva choices. I have read about it with G.969 as well

I will make sure I stake those G series trees for at least 4 + years. I normally do this with all my newly planted trees. Since the G series has a history of graft union breakage it is especially important to stake the trees.

I stake too.
