Goumi, Elaeagnus multiflora, Cultivar Trialing

thanks for the post, i didn’t know about all the different cultivars available outside the USA, i recently got Monty’s Surprise Apple tree that came out of New Zealand, Burnt Ridge Nursery had to put the tree in quarantine for two years before they could start propagating it for public sale, So i am sure the verities of Goumi you have will probably never get to the markets available to us in the USA, those are some interesting facts about fruit characteristics. I have Carmine, Red Gem and Sweet Scarlet Goumi growing in my garden. no fruit this year but next year looks good because they did flower. Same to you, best wishes and success.

I’m having a hard time finding goumi in the USA. I’ve gotten 2 varieties from Ison’s this spring and they are doing well. Can anyone tell me where varieties are available?

Interesting. I’ve never seen any of these varieties listed for sale in the US. Do you know where they are available?

Hi
I also live in Austria.
You have some interesting varieties. I only have Red Gem and a seedling.
Please let me know if you sell some scions.
Or I have a couple of hybrid persimmon varieties for exchange(scions and also grafted trees) and some other rare cultivar.

Also interested in some of the above named cultivars. I could not find any in EU nurseries, other than SC or seedlings.

I noticed Burnt Ridge Nursery seems to be offering a variety named “Sunrise Ruby”. The website indicates that it is a “large fruited Korean variety”. I wonder how this compares to Daiougoumi and Carmine. There aren’t any pictures on the website for the variety.

I have these 3 that are rather common in the USA.

Sweet scarlet left
Red gem top
Carmine right

Red gem and Carmine pit sizes.

I can distinguish very little difference in their taste or sweetness levels. They are all mildly sweet, mildly tart and have a nice mild fruity flavor.

I am taking a (air layer) of Carmine with me to my new orhard… new home site. Will graft others to it for pollination and fruit variety.

I have found goumi very easy to graft.
I did 3 grafts of carmine a couple years ago… all successful and a couple of them even bloomed and fruited that first spring.

I would love to add a graft or 3 of that larger one. To me bigger is better with goumi… since they all taste the same to me.

Doesn’t one of the little ones ripen earlier than the other two varieties? I also think of it as sweeter, but maybe because when I compare them, it is riper.

I have red gem and sweet scarlet… with 3 grafts of carmine added to them.

There is about 1.5 to 2 weeks difference in peak ripe for RG and SS for me here in TN.

At this point I cant rememember for sure which is earlier.

Carmine ripened in the middle.

I have had a air layer going on one of my Carmine grafts since July 1… i am hoping to duplicate Carmine and plant it at our new home site… once I have it established there will graft on some RG SS for pollination and fruit variety.

All 3 taste very similar to me… Carmine is preferred for its fruit size… 2-3X of RG SS.

I’ve finally found a Czech(near enough) nursery that doesn’t list goumi just as a species. The cultivar they offer is Leonore. Is anyone familiar with it?

I do not recommend this nursery. It’s a scam. He steals pictures from other websites.

Thanks, good to know! Do you have any idea where one can get goumi reliably in CZ/SK? I’d even grow it from seed. I already have enough good umbellatas to order goumi and get yet another autumn olive instead.

Yeah, that matches my experience. The smallest one ripens first.

This is very interesting. In France I found only SweetScarlet so far. But I’d be really interested in getting a Carmine or a Daiougoumi
@MichaelL and @Austrian_FruitNut can you please advise where you got your specimen of Daiougoumi please? And if you are selling a cutting or a routed cutting I’d be very interested.

Get the pruners out…

I am sitting in a rocking chair on the front porch. Very nice evening…

My red gem and sweet scarlet are just over in the side yard area.

I cut them back to 5 ft tall late winter… looks like 3-4 ft of growth this year.

@Fishinjunky … Planted them early spring 2020.

They have 3 grafts of carmine on them that produced well this year.
