Grass Height

Squirrels don’t like crossing open spaces on the ground because they are much more vulnerable, not sure if grass height makes the difference (I would actually think they would prefer the taller grass to hide from hawks? Then again maybe tall grass makes squirrels move too slow?) They are much more comfortable moving into your orchard if they can stay in the trees the whole time

I see squirrels run through tall grass on a daily basis. I have no idea if they “like” it or not

Maybe my lack of squirrels in my orchard is due to my trees being widely spaced. As they grow that will not be the case, though.

Squirrels will hop through tall grass if they have to if there are no trees to use as their means or travel. I’ve seen it happen more than once. If they are looking for food they will do whatever they need to do to eat.

We live in the mesa which has tall grass. If anything it houses more squirrels and houses more things bad like rattle snakes. I don’t see too many squirrels when I enter the Denver area due to there being so little open areas to hide. Other things are absent too. Louis CK has even mentioned rural folk vs City Folk in seeing deer with his standup routines. Squirrels are also super territorial which is why you see them chasing each other around. They are not playing but chasing the other out of its land. It is the same reason people are against bird feeders. My uncle and grandma has been trying to convince us to get a bird feeder for years even offering to give us one as a Christmas present one year. My mother and I keep mentioning we don’t want a bird feeder because they attract unwanted animals like squirrels, snakes, rats, etc.

Here they say the grass is 4" high in the morning. And 6" high at sunset. It feels about right.
