Growing loquats in the Pacific Northwest

Thanks! That’s not what I’m seeing so I guess none this year.

I’m in the same boat as @swincher. That’s helpful to know that flower buds would be visible by now.

you shouldn’t give up yet. I would wait until early October.

This was what I was seeing that I hadn’t seen before… basically new branches without any leaves yet

Those aren’t flower buds.
But a lot of my potted trees don’t have flowers yet - only in ground trees. So there is still time.

My loquat sent out a leafless shoot like that over winter last year. When spring rolled around it leafed out.

My buds aren’t even close to that developed so I’m surprised you guys are that far along.
These are my farthest along on the southeast

The last is a strawberry graft from spring

Mine are in a similar stage @Gkight. They seem to be still actively growing.

My first seedling loquat with flower buds!
It is about 9 years old.

I’ve had a small loquat seedling a year. It barely put out any growth the whole year, until the last month and a half when it pretty much doubled in size. Doesn’t seem normal, but this is my first loquat so I’ve nothing to go by.

It just seems far happier and healthier in this cool/wet fall weather than it has been all year. Is this normal for Loquats to be pushing out new growth at this time of year?

This seems to be normal to me. They push tons of growth in autumn for me also. I think because of their bloom/fruiting cycle. Pushing growth after recovering from fruit production and doesn’t push much growth during the fruiting cycle. But that’s just my limited experience and guess

Same for me. They grow most vigorously in the cooler weather. Which is rather surprising for a semi tropical.

Yes, Viking does send out a second flush of flowers, although I am not sure if it’s self fertile, although most loquats do appear to be self fertile.

Hey everyone. I’ve been following this thread for some time now as a fellow PNW loquat enthusiast.

I just came across a podcast about the Chinese International District loquat tree and figured others here would appreciate it as much as I did. What a great story!

Searching a combination of ā€œLoquat Treeā€ and ā€œTen Thousand Things with Shin Yu Paiā€ should get you the pod. This website isnt letting me post the link directly.

While I’m here, is anyone aware of fruiting loquat trees on Vancouver Island or elswhere in BC? I’m already aware of the Duncans and Fruit Trees and More.

Hi Jon. Welcome!
Found the podcast! My evening listen is now set up.

Btw Bob Duncan knows the locations of each of the Vancouver / Vancouver Island trees. Not sure if he is keen on sharing their locations.

Can they actually fruit here?

They fruit every year.

But do they keep? Like, can they ripen fully since they like to fruit around this time

@Melon, They fruit in spring.

I listened to the podcast. Well worth a listen.
I’m so glad the tree will now be preserved along with the house! I wish my loquat trees were this fortunate!

The varieties have definitely improved over the years though this is clearly a special tree.
