Growing loquats in the Pacific Northwest

Does anyone know what these spots on my potted tree’s leaves are? Occuring on relatively new leaves (brand new and older leaves look fine). The impacted leaves also start to become bumpy with edges curved down.

Novak is a good selection, nice medium to larger size fruits. It tastes similar to Yehuda and Big Jim. It is not as sweet as my Big Jim but still above average in taste. Don’t waste your time with Obusa, or Mizuho, not really impressed with the tastes of these two. If you can get Tanaka, it is better than these Japanese varieties (Obusa, Mizuho, Mogi). I’m just grafting more Tanaka since it seems to taste the best of the group and getting rid of the other grafted branches.

Peluche is still my largest size fruits (came in at 126 g) this year again. It has consistently large fruits and many on the branches. The issue with Peluche that people think makes it bland is that it has a very short ripening days when the fruit actually tastes above average and has a really nice flora type of smell when you eat the flesh. So you need to wait until it ripens just right, for me it was in April (SoCal), if you pick it sooner it has no taste. Then if you wait too long lik now in May (SoCal) then it goes flat and it seems to be just watery with no sweet taste. If you wait too long on the tree, it starts to wrinkle and still no sweetness/bland.

I did send about 3 different loquat varieties to a gal in FL and she did a YouTube video of her taste test and she liked the Peluche a lot. Then when I sent her more varieties again, she rated a few others better tasting than the Peluche.

Here’s the 2 videos Rain made, check it out.

Thank you, i guess I’ll keep just these then. Oh btw, can i harass you for some scions sometime? :joy:

Which is your favorite overall?

Sorry, not selling any more loquat scions except what I post on the TFF.

What’s the link to the post because TFF is messed up and i can’t make an account there because of the password issue

The 2 links I showed above is to YouTube video review of my loquats.

Link to TFF because it won’t let people make accounts to be able to search things. That forum is messed up

A lot of us can’t see what you post on there. It won’t let new people make accounts for some reason

Its this one pretty sure. The other one says its closed now. Weird that it won’t let you make an account. Not weird that you can’t search without an account, thats just how its set up. Gotta remember that scientific name for avacado

It keeps saying “password can’t be blank”

Another person had messaged me and said that they had the same issue too so that tells me it isn’t an isolated event.

Eh nvm. I don’t meet criteria #1 anyways.

If you live in the USA, then I will sell it to you since you are a member here.
What state do you live? Send me a message if you are interested.

I really like TFF, but I’m not as active there as I once was. Mostly due to not enjoying the site much, but when it comes to tropical fruit there is a ton of knowledge and experimenters there. I stopped going also to stop buying more seeds to more trees that I don’t have room for. Think I’m even at capacity for potted trees (tropicals that is). Only so much room in my greenhouse.

My peluche grafts are growing well @george , also my Barbie pink died to the ground(slowly regrowing) due to my mismanagement over winter. But a cutting I managed to root last year is growing pretty well. My geshukin sweet (orange fleshed) is almost ready for a larger pot.

Unfortunately looks like I will get no loquat fruits this year, must have been a mix of too cold and too wet for the blooms/fruits. But my one branch blooming now is going to be interesting. Even a handful of fruits in summer will be awesome; hopefully they ripen while my in laws are visiting in august so I can spread the gospel of the humble loquat.

I think I’m going to wait to see how my current grafts are before committing to more grafts.

I’ve had a better success rate in rooting things than grafting.

I have a total of 12 loquat trees now.

I’m giving up growing apricots in the pnw…

Replacing them with loquats instead.

Good call. Apricots grown here are usually mediocre. I’ve heard of the mythical orange red and how good it is. But never tasted one.

Tlor tsiran? I forgot about that one. I have it lol. Totally forgot it’s an Apricot. This will be my first year.

My ume’s had a ton of blooms but they got destroyed with the March frosts i think. I remember seeing the buds but nothing flowering…

Have another one too but no idea what its doing. Just watered it and haven’t been paying attention.

I love dehydrated apricots but if they’re all flowering at the first breath of a sunny day… I’m not gonna keep trying. Going to plant them somewhere and hope for the best in the future lol.

The bunch I grabbed the other week from OGW.

Shelly is the one with multiple branching.

Wolfe, Dr. Moy, Novak, and Michael.

Have 7 gallon Christmas and Ed’s Delight coming in from just fruits and exotics.

Argelino and Shambala grafts (not pictured) sitting in the shade near my front door.

I wanted to cut shelly down to only 1 main stem but she’s greening up and looking happy so I decided not to. Everyone else also seems really happy in full sunrise to sunset sun. I had the trees cut down around them so they could get more sun. Don’t mind my old greenhouse in pieces next to it. :smiling_face_with_tear: I’m sad about my greenhouse right now since i can’t put it up myself. Still clearing land for it all as well.

If i don’t end up liking them… Their fruits will be up for adoption throughout the years lol. I would still care for them but I’d give away and sell the fruits. Going to keep them all in pots for this year and maybe next so that I can try the fruits. Will do the plant shuffle during those really cold days. Planning on getting 15 gallons for them soon.

I wanna say 7 is a good number but I have 3 Argelino grafts going so I have a few trees… They seemed kinda of unhappy at OGW but then again, they were in greenhouse then full shade when i was there.

All my figs that survived except 4 small ones, 4 in larger pots, and 2 one gallon pots are floating around somewhere. Along with 3 community rooting pots in the back.

Also also, leaf hoppers LOVE Shelly.
I might call Michael, Michelle because dude trees don’t produce fruit… Ed will just be “Delight” don’t know about ya’ll but I don’t like dude names for female fruiting trees even if it’s supposed to be named after the people who found them. Last name, sure but first name
