New member here, and just introducing myself. I’m Benjamin in Bellevue, WA and have been growing some loquats in pots and one in the ground for several years. I just got flowers for the first time last winter, but the flowers rotted off in the cold. I’ll try to catch up with the long running thread. Thank you!
Are there distinct varieties called Angelino and Argelino, or are the instances of Angelino likely mistranscriptions of the name Argelino?
They are the same.
Argelino, Angelino, Algerie all refer to the same loquat.
Angelino is a false made up name. But has made into common use.
They all refer to the best tasting aka “reference” loquat of Europe.
Here is a great document that I found several years ago describing the best loquat varieties of Europe.
Argelino/Algerie is the gold standard.
Descripción-de-variedades-de-Níspero-japonés.es.en.pdf (1.5 MB)
Thanks for sharing the document. The brix numbers seem low.
I think it’s harvest time brix. For fruit that ships to market.
Usually I see 20+ brix on my fruit.
I need it. How much…
Only kind of joking
20+ brix is unthinkable here in Taiwan.
Even our vest variety struggled to hit 14
These look nice right?
They are some of our best Loquat variety.
『It’s true』aka Tainung No.3
Brix 12
Is it because of the climate difference?
I think i just stumbled upon a great research opportunity.
I almost never see a brix < 16. For fully ripe almost shriveling fruit. Usually super sweet at 20+ brix. @george has varieties that go upto brix 29!!
Are you able to grow Chinese varieties in Taiwan? Lots of interesting varieties there.
How long should we wait after repotting to graft?
I spent enough to get another free 1 gallon today so i grabbed it after my appointment.
I started with 3, ended up with 7… Honestly i read “they smell amazing during bloom time in winter” or something like that and thought to myself… I need something to fill the air after my gardenia, lilacs, lily and jasmine go to sleep. The fruits would be a plus but I’m hoping to hit every corner of my home with a tree once i figure out where i wanna put them later this or early next year. 15 and 20 gallon pots. They’re protecting my little bumblebee nest next to my door right now. Sheltered from sun except maybe 2 hours at the few closest to the edge. I just rinsed them and gave them a tiny bit of water.
Also Ram’s trees are so beautiful. I got inspired.
Welp… looks like i can’t create an account of Tropical Fruit forum for some reason. It keeps saying by field can’t be blank. This may be better for me anyways…
Anyone growing Peluche or Vista? How do they do up here?
@ramv says peluche is overrated, very bland to him. I would say you can graft those easily now. I grafted a few smaller than that, I have about 200 to sell now but whatever people don’t buy I’ll move to a 3g and graft but I’ll just graft my unnamed seedling tree on them. It tastes great and it’ll fruit for them next year so that’s all people other than us care about.
They do smell great though
Awww, i said that about desert King the other day and people gasped at the nursery
I don’t like desert King but when i need a fix, I’ll take a hit.
This is my drug lol. I just told my husband who’s deployed right now and has no idea what I’ve been getting:
At least the fruits of my labor actually give fruits.
If you think ‘Desert King’ is bland then I would wonder if you’ve only tasted it non-fresh (like at a fig tasting where it may not have been picked the same day). They’re very flavorful straight off the tree!
I got some from the dude who called himself the fig king after the fig tasting. I dunno, that’s just my taste buds.
Melon, those figs were not ripe.
I’ve had some pretty bad tasting (bland) ‘Desert King’ figs at a couple of tastings, because they get picked and then left to sit until (or in your case, until after) the tasting instead of being eaten right away as they should be.
Here’s my update to my post from December. After a pretty mild winter where the lowest low at my house was -6.8C (I suspect this park may have been slightly milder due to microclimate), I went back to the mature loquat park tree (Saanich, BC), and a whopping single fruit was the only I could find that appears to be ripening…
One green world has a good selection of loquats but they said they don’t want to ship out because they’re too big to ship easily.
Today they had:
Sherry
Novak
Obusa
Dr. Moy
Michael
Harvest
A bunch of seedlings
Gold Nugget seedlings
Gold Nugget
Wolfe
I was looking for Mizuho and Yehuda but couldn’t find any. Their email dude is doesn’t seem to know what’s going on because they told me that they don’t sell 5 gallons and that things are not in stock but in person, it’s in stock. Seems like email dude refers to website only and may not even work at the nursery.
I grabbed a Sherry, Dr. Moy, Michael, Harvest, Novak and Wolfe. May be back to grab Obusa and look for Mizuho and Yehuda again sometime.
It says online they’re out of stock but the guy today told me that’s only because they don’t really want to ship them since they sell pretty well in person. Spent 5 hours but saved myself about 120$ in shipping thinking about cutting back Sherry to a single branch for now since she’s on 5 branches. All the others are single branched for now. Also wanted to grab a Lentaj Currant but they’re all infested with aphids currently
and i don’t wanna deal with bugs if i can help it…
Restoring eden says they’ll have named varieties soon but not sure how soon. I’m going to poke around Seatac tomorrow if i have time.
Restoring eden has 1 gallon seedlings that are about 3-5 ft tall (with pot).
The ones from one green world are about 2-3 ft tall with pot. Sherry is the tallest there and there was only 1 more left of her in a 2 gallon at OGW.
