How do you use a baseboard for this? Picture please?
I donât do this, but I did make one. You take a small piece of wood (in my case about 6 inch 4x4. And you drill angled cuts in the wood in various diameters (to fit varied sizes scions you plan to use). Then you would slide the scion in the drilled holes and slice it flat to the side of the wood which would be on the angle, rotate it 180* and make your second cut for a perfect cut. I believe @TNHunter posted a photo of his which he used for his first graft or maybe just made also for fun. Iâve found it to be only useful for very troublesome scions but havenât made use of mine. I also agree 100% with @george that a basic cleft graft is about all you need for almost any task (chip budding aside).
I also donât use a glove as I donât use gloves for anything basically. I have only cut myself cleaning knives or an old post about a pair of trimmers that have blades on the outside of the blade also while being careless forgetting both sides are sharp.
With a little practice with knife skills and starting with room to readjust your cut, and a sharp knife I donât feel I need to use the block. However it is a good idea and does work well, however if you have a dull blade it will still make a somewhat wavy cut using this technique.
Iâve never though of this, thank you
Just use anything that is like a cutting board, put it on your lap and cut the scion flat on it. Do you know how people clean & fillet fish with a knife, like that board. I got the idea since I like to go fishing, works great. Do donât use your kitchen cutting board.
I really like your custom board, a special verison just fo the application, very creative. You can be an engineer (Iâm a retired one).
Thatâs the 2"x4", not the smartest way to cut it. You can get hurt real fast copying YouTube, use some common safety sense.
I can see me missing the tip of my finger with his methodâŚ
Yup, if youâre experienced and good with knife, then no problem doing things by copying what YouTubers show. But for beginners these are bad videos to learn how to do grafting. Once you go to the emergency room, then you will learn to do it the right way if you are a beginner.
i was just posting the video because grafting using a 2x4 was mentioned and i remembered mr. west using one in his pawpaw grafting video.
Overly complicated method.
Grafting isnât rocket science.
Restoring eden now has a few premier and some âgold Nugget hybridâ in stock.
What is gold Nugget hybrid lol
Gold nugget is not my favorite. The only good thing is it doesnât get sugar spots.(purple spots)
It makes a good rootstock.
Do you know anything about where the âhybridâ part comes from or why?
Basically itâs a wild seedling of gold nugget I suspect. Unknown other parent.
Yeah hybrid is typically fancy for seedling when attached to a named variant.
I saw this tree on S. Columbian Way,going up to Beacon Hill,in Seattle.Nice looking one, right by the street but the flowers/fruit were fried.Maybe because of inadequate cold protection.
In contrast, two in a private residenceâs back yard, near the Beacon Hill Food Forest, have decent fruit sets.
Theyâve been under mist for over a week, but thatâs still too early to know.
