Growing loquats in the Pacific Northwest

Shambala starting to ripen. This is the earliest I’ve seen them ripen. They will be earlier than any stone fruit at this rate. With a long season.

Another branch with some blossoms. The last blooms a month ago or so never amounted to any fruit. Still kind of cool

After they fruit, do they then start to grow little side shoots from that branch?

I have Christmas and Ed’s Delight coming in from Florida on Monday.

Also have 2 strawberry loquat scions coming in as well soon.

Will probably grow these in pots for the next 5 years until i can get all the little firepits bought and put in around the area that I’ll be growing them in. Then will start fires every time it gets below 32 degrees to keep the flowers from freezing. If not then they’ll be rolled into a greenhouse lol

Yes, they start growing once the fruiting is done.
Strawberry is supposed to be really good!
Also heard good things about Ed’s delight.

Interesting, its out of stock but they list Viking.

I’m seeing it in stock still?

Bad phrasing on my part. Inspired by your post, I took a look at their listings and was surprised to see that they have Viking. But it is out of stock.

They just messaged me saying that orange dream will be out of stock until winter. I’m assuming the other varieties as well

Is viking any good?

I had Viking, probably still have it but I lost its tag!! So I dont know which of my trees it is.

I’ve only ever had fruit from a delicious seedling that may be average as far as I know, and bland fruit from Weee! that weren’t worth eating.

ramv,

Isn’t Viking the one that’s supposed to be especially vigorous. Perhaps it will distinguish itself.

You said to keep you posted on how the grafts from your prunings do.

So far Shambala is growing on a young loquat seedling rootstock ahead of the other grafts on that tree that were done weeks ago. No signs yet on quince, but the Argelino there is looking vital still. A couple of OGW scions on the quince placed weeks ago are also growing.

Here’s a blurry picture from yesterday. Looks better, and more in focus :), today.

Also the UPS guy left it at the end of my driveway and i wasn’t able to get to it for about 4 hours. They baked in box IN the sun but were still pretty happy.

One came with aphids so i stuck it in my garage and sprayed captain Jack’s dead bug brew then left it there for a few hours while it dried before setting it outside after all the pollinators left.

I bought some Jack’s Brew once and then found out,Aphids weren’t listed on the label.Hopefully it worked with your plants.
