Excellent. (Didn’t they sort through a lot of apples to obtain specimens for these pretty pictures, though!?)

ps. Shinsu, Mutsu, Granny Smith and Fuji…is there an age that qualifies for ‘heirloom’?

I thought the Granny Smith was a modern apple too BUT I read it has been around since 1868 in Australia. Just more recently introduced to the USA. The others are modern ones. Just about all apples discovered before 1930 are considered " heirloom" varieties I believe.

Anyone know what these are?
I was surprised at tle lack of dimples at the top and bottom and the 5 lobed shape.

They are some random apples I found in Moscow in a very normal supermarket in the “seasonal apples” box in Russia, which is how they sell the ones that are getting too ripe or they have too many of and I have never seen apples like this, I tried a couple and then bought more, they have a very summer apple flavor, but lots of flavor and the texture is pretty good, surprisingly enough.

Moskovskoe Zimnee{Moscow Winter}. A cross of Antonova and Wealthy. Oddly said to turn yellow/green from dully red striped in splotches in storage.

Says they have some spiciness. Do yours?

@dannytoro1

I think that is subjective. @39thparallel grows one called red cinnamon i can taste some hint of cinnamon in but most apples people call spicy leave me dissapointed. I would love to try them and see what they taste like.

I agree with you about tasting " spicy" apples. I have been disappointed in the taste of the “spicy” apples as well. Sooner or later maybe I will find one that hits me as being " spicy".

Plant a “RedRebel” and eat it without peeling it…lol

I detect a hint of mischief. Is the skin bitter or acrid or something?

Red Rebel skin is very bitter. It is a very good cider choice.
