Help!! what is causing these holes in apple leaves?
The scions are all from a unknown apple tree I found planted in a yard. The rootstocks are G890 all cleft grafted.
All 5 show holes in leaves some worse than others but I haven’t seen any bugs?
Im in zone 6b WV

My experience of living in zone 6B tells me asian lady beatles. They seem to be most active early in the morning then disappear, only to become active again the following morning. I’m not sure where they hide during the day. But I sprayed my pots, apple graft buds, leaves, the scion, rootstock and the top of the potting mix with orchard spray and haven’t seen hide nor hair of them since. Asian lady beatles are not lady bugs, the look similar, but I’ve found asian lady beatles are destructive little things.

Thank you do you have a link for the orchard spray you used?

It’s the orchard spray they sell at Rural King. I mixed with water per directions in a pump sprayer.

Join the crowd…I have lots of such. (I only spray if I feel I have to, generally).
Caterpillar or worm seems to be responsible for some…little green fellers.

I have been looking for that spray. I will go my Rural King and see if you can find it.

thank you,
@BlueBerry can i treat them with diatomaceous earth sprinkled on the mulch in the pot then spray the leaves with bonide sulfur? i have both DE and Sulfur on hand. I would rather not have to purchase a spray

I have followed your journey and many posts here and on all of the FB groups. Likely you will encounter many many more challenges living here in WV growing an unknown variety of apple.

Here is a good basic guide of all the pests and diseases you are likely to encounter at various levels throughout the life cycle of your apple tree.

Thank you i really appreciate it. Its been a lot fun growing.
Other than the holes in some leaves they are doing really good. I was a bit worried about losing them but i think the damage is older.

Really, a few holes here and there…you’re doing great if those are your only problems in the apple orchard. But, diatomaceous earth is a deterrent to many a soft-skinned insect. (But, if the eating is happening from the underside of the leaf, it may not be all that effective.
Can’t hurt though.)

Sulphur for pest control…I don’t have any experience trying it for that purpose.
