How far along are your trees?

Margil. Survived deer, my poor grafting, and picture taking. I knocked the graft out just seconds after this photo.

I’ve caught 6 rabbits this spring. Just looked out the front window and here are 2 huge rabbits and a baby … At this point their damage seems to level off some, but i still don’t trust them around my zinnias, sunflowers, etc…

All of my fruit trees listed below were planted bare root last year. The Blenheim Apricot has done the best. It has 20 fruits on it and they are turning yellow nicely.

I have a two tree in a hole combo of Flavor King and Flavor Supreme. The FK has 16 fruits on it but FS didn’t set any.

Next up is my 4 in 1 Apple tree. There are a few fruits on it and some blossoms too which looks very late.

Lastly, it’s my 5in1 turned 4in1 turned 3in1 Asian Pear. It has one lonely fruit only.

Nice trees. What is the reasoning for your 5x1 asian to now be a 3x1? Did some of the grafts eventually die? I also have a 5x1 asian planted this year. It set several fruit which I thinned off.

Nice clean looking fruit. Did Flavor Supreme flower just not set fruit? I wonder if its a pollination thing. I have 8 different pluots and a number of plums, so my FS sets fruit…i just have no idea what is pollinating it.

One of the grafts was broken right at the union by my gardener when he cut down a nearby Pine. There is a 4th graft still there but it’s barely growing. It’ll probably get shaded out eventually. I’ve spent too much time keeping the other grafts cut back to its size.

Thanks. I tried pollinating FS with a brush with pollen from FK as well as Emerald Beaut Plum. My neighbor across the fence nearby has a great fruit set on her unidentified Plum and 3in1 pluot which includes Geo Pride. There were very few pollinators out this year with the early bloom. That didn’t help either.

Nice looking trees. They have strong growth for trees just planted last year. My experience with Flavor Supreme is that it flowers heavy but doesn’t set much fruit. It may do better in your location. Also it grows like a weed. I have to prune mine three times a year and have never fertilized it.

I have pretty much picked 98% of the plums off my Alderman plum tree (200?). I view this tree as sort of a refuge for the PC to go and do their thing and boy do they take advantage…while most of my trees have been very clean (with the help of permethrin) this tree has been ravaged.

And there are more egg laying scars on the other sides… nasty.

And in case anyone is wondering. PC is still actively laying eggs here. I caught 2 live ones and one had just made an incision in a plum (i could tell because the egg laying scar was still clear). Both were squished… my crude math figures have me squishing at least 10 PC and finding a few more that were already dead.

My Satsuma plums are getting bigger. This might be the first year I get fruit. While trying to root cuttings one of the cuttings flowered and I hand pollenated these with Toka. I tried on three different days as three flowers grew on the cutting. Two of the Toka grafts grew too. They have about three foot of growth on them! here’s my plums. There’s ten of them. I think this is pretty good seeing they were cut from a tree and mailed to me from Washington!

I just want to add that this tree has one Shiro graft out of two that took. My Santa Rosa has three grafts out of five that took. Two Toka, and one Beauty. The Beauty took about two months to take but it has grown about twelve inches with several buds. I’ll go out and take pictures of the grafts.

My plum grafts on my Santa Rosa tree.

Above and below are the Toka with an easy three foot of growth. One has two branches. I hooked my PT rubber bands just below the grafts.

The picture above is the Beauty graft with the electrical tape still coming off.

Congratulations, John. I do love a tree ripened plum. I probably enjoy them extra much since they are my first tree fruit of the season. This year was a horrible one for mine. I missed them so much it almost hurt.

I take it the enclosures are to protect them from deer and rabbits? If you have squirrels, watch out. I wouldn’t have had many thanks to weather and curculios, but I would have had several more if it hadn’t been for an evil and persistent squirrel that stole all but that one. He must not have seen it.

Yes the cage is to keep the deer out. I put the boards on the bottom because the fawns were crawling under and eating the tree. After mowing today I ran the sweeper around and clipped the bottom left corner with the sweeper. I have a row of hops I just planted in June in-between this tree and my orchard. The sweeper kicked out sideways and took out two of my best growing hops plants! They are no longer climbing the rope now, and I broke the bottom boards to my enclose. Crap! I guess I wont try that again. The hops weren’t that tall anyway seeing I just planted them but it would have been nice to keep them climbing. Next year I should get better growth with those.

Those look good John.I’m glad some scions grew and hope they provide an abundance of fruit. Brady

Thanks Brady, The Toka has more growth than any other on the tree. I cut two foot off when grafting. It hurt to remove it, but wow it grew back nicely. I wonder if I head those back a bit if it will help make flower buds for next season? This tree has never flowered yet. I am hoping for some fruit next year. I also say that every year too, lol! For sure I will have lots of plums in the future. Can you believe I got plums on my Satsuma from a Toka cutting that bloomed? Fantastic!

I have 3 Gingergold apples making a run for maturity. Sizing up nicely:

Don’t they just look dead sexy in their silk stalkings?

Look good enough to eat! But they won’t be ready for another few weeks…

Ha ha funny Matt! I suppose you told your wife, (But honey they can’t have any runs, or holes in them).
They do look sexy though!

My first year for apples I grafted. Here is some of my Honey Crisp.

Here is some Gala’s.

Ok I bought this as an Alberta peach tree, but this is the fruit. It’s smoothed skinned no fuzz. I remember seeing fruit in the store next to the peaches but can’t recall what they are called.
