How far along are your trees?

My Satsuma plums are getting bigger.

Here are some of my 20th Century Asian pears.

I grow Elbertas and they are not smooth skinned. I believe you have a mismarked nectarine. At least hopefully, it will be delish!

I googled it after I posted and yes, I think your right. I bought two Alberta’s and one died this year. It had about thirty peaches on it that had fuzz. The roots sent suckers up so I will have some kind of peach tree from those. The tree had a canker on it and it rained all spring and summer! Plus the two years of hard freezing cold weather might have killed the trunk too. I lost an apple tree and a couple others where the trunks split and pealed bark from the freeze. I actually like the idea of a Nectarine. It gives me more variety. Nectarine is what I was trying to think of when I first saw them but my head gets cloudy sometimes and could only think of tangerine which I knew wasn’t right. Lol! Hopfully they taste great!

Got these earlier today from Deep Run Pawpaw Orchard mentioned above.

I think Allegheny remains my favorite.

For those of you dying to taste pawpaw-- The proprietor will be shipping wholesale only for the next 3 weeks. 10 pound box minimum. Approx $40 per 10 pound box. Contact information listed earlier in this thread.

Anyone who orders Krymsk 1…my little sticks ended up growing over 5 feet tall with some decent branching…i’m not budding them this year…i’ll probably prune them back a little next year…i want at least 5 varieties… Rabbits were hitting them all summer so i had to put fencing around all of them.

Hey Matt…I was in Washington, DC the other day and found a farmers market down on Connecticut Ave. NW / Albemarle and they had Paw Paws. My wife bought a few and I finally got a chance to sample them.

Sadly, I didn’t like them at all. Wasn’t wild about the flavor and definitely did not like the texture. I kinda expected that .My wife loves them and swears they had them in the Philippines, but by a different name. I’m not so sure about that, but they definitely have a tropical look to me.
Maybe they did grow there as a non-deciduous tree…I dunno.

Jeff,

Pawpaws are related to several other tropical fruits like cherimoya, soursops, sugar-apples, etc.

yeah…I can see the resemblance on the inside, but they sure look nothing alike on the outside. I’ll show her those and see what she says.

so…I asked her and showed her the photos and she said while they had those also, she was not mistaking them. She even told me the names they had for all of them. When shown the photo of sugar apples she said they called those Atis.
Soursop is called Guyabano
I think she called Cherimoya Rabana

I looked them up and it checks out.

Yeah, I just did a little research and found that the sugar-apple (annona squamosa) has been widely cultivated and naturalized in the Phillipines.

Not sure how they have pawpaws over there too, as the seeds need cold-stratification or they won’t germinate. Do temps get down into the 40s for at least 3 months over there? I am not familiar with the Phillipines climate.

nope…never in the 40’s where she’s from…not even close.

Maybe they behave differently…kinda like trees that are deciduous here grow as evergreens in other parts of the world.
OR…maybe she’s just mistaken. (nope…can’t be that…lol)

Apple,

Pawpaws are cousin of the sweet sop and Cherimoya and your wife loved them from the Philippines.

Tony,

How do they taste?

Matt,

They are crunchy and mildly sweet at this greenish brown stage that reminiscent of crab apple flavor. In another two weeks or so, some will turn into mahogany color then they will be a lot sweeter but lower in Vit. C. Dr Yao said the greenish one contains Vitamin C twenty times more than an orange. So I try to pick some greenish brown ones. If you let them go completely mahogany for to long periods of time then they will become spongy and will dry out. Good preserved for cooking.
