How is the squirrel and chipmunk pressure this season for you?

I’ve been seeing them all over. I started to trap them in rat traps. So far got 6 this week. I leave the dead ones out and the coons or possums clean up the mess at night.

Be careful with the rat traps. Don’t be a scatter brain like me. I got my thumb caught in a trap yesterday.

I almost did it again today. The problem is cocking the trap and moving it. Don’t do it, don’t cock the trap until the trap is in situ. (That is a big word for in place.)

Try the Squirrelinator. Easy to use. No danger of self-harm. It catches lots of squirrels, sometimes two at a time. I’ve got two and I can easily top 40 per year. A few years ago I got >80.

Squirrel pressure lite. Lots of chippies since we have no more cats but they don’t cause much trouble.

What do you use for bait in it?

Usually feed corn. I know that peanuts work.

I have enough hawks and owls around to keep the squirrel and chipmunk population under control.

Squirrels, my wife loves the cute little things running around in the trees. For a long time we had equilibrium. I didn’t know it at the time but we had an understanding.

They would eat all the cherries they wanted from the wild cherry trees on the property and they would clean out one old unknown variety of European plum that was on the property when we moved here. Other than that they would leave all the fruit trees I planted alone.

But one day I had the old wild cherry trees cut down

The squirrels were outraged. They banded together, formed a “union” (more of an outlaw gang if you ask me) and decided that the best way to show me their displeasure with my actions would be to do their best to eat EVERYTHING I GROW!

I considered planting some sacrificial nut trees to appease the rodent overlords. I tried appeasing them with boxes and boxes of nuts. They gladly took all the nuts and sunflower seeds I could put out…….And they still ate all my fruit.

I would have been better off conducting business on Continental grounds than cutting down those cherry trees…… go figure
