Tornadoes to the right of us, tornadoes to the left of us …
No real damage here at all, now it’s over. Good to have the heat blown away.

We have had long hot dry spell here. Started mid June and continues today…
Many many days in the mid to upper 90s.
Most years I do very little watering… but this is not one of those years.
Warering my garden … okra squash peppers tomatoes…
Watering fruit trees started this spring… or new fruit tree grafts that were done this spring.
We still need a good slow all night rain… but all we are getting is the occasional pop up thunderstorm that last 10 minutes and is gone. It might rain on my neighbor but not me.
Oh well… we will get thru this.
Missed out on all that up here. Kewanee, IL had a 105mph wind gust. Almost a derecho. Cold fron thru now…dewpoint went from 75F to 65F and will drop more.
We got hit with our third wind event of the summer yesterday afternoon, with tornado damage in and around Rome, NY. More trees down in our woodlots and when we checked the orchard, I discovered more trees on B.118 have fallen over. I’ll be spending the day staking trees. I’m learning to dislike B.118.
Good luck with your trees, I had to stake a few back up today too.
I wont be grafting any more trees on b118
i had 2 i planted up on the mountain that had to be staked that were also on b118. question is why are so many nurseries grafting to this if they arent rooting well? my black oxford i just put in in may is also on it but at least my property is ringed in trees so wind doesnt get bad here.
I think b118 may be a good choice on sandy soil sites in zones 3-5. Other than that, I am not sure why its used. IME, m111 is as winter hardy and better rooted…but maybe slower to bear.
I’m done with clonals. Everything I do from here on will be seedling of some sort.
My grafting philosophy has been going that way lately, too. It’s also cheaper if the root stock comes up wild in your fields. With a lot of stone fruit I’m going more and more with seedlings as well.
why st Lawrence nursery uses standard antovoka. im also saving all my seed to grow out my rootstocks. planting a bunch this fall.
Been dry here now for a solid week. River back down so you can boat again, but still a little high. Temps have been around 80F…very nice but humidity has stayed high. Rain tomorrow and cooler/dry rest of week again. Also a lot of smoke showing up on sat imagery.
@resonanteye You getting smoked out yet? It went from zero to nasty in interior BC since last week.
Some 30Fs this morning north of the border in Ontario. I still think we’ve only had 1 90F day here so far this summer. Should warm back up this weekend/next week. Going on a very nice stretch of dry weather. We missed out on any rain early this week–all stayed west and south.
NWS had this rainfall map which covers most of June. All that heavy stuff ended up in the Mississippi.
Low 80Fs again today. 59F this morning.
We are in the 90s for the next 8 days. Poor lawn, garden, and orchard. High water bill also.
Somebody turned the rain off. Haven’t had a drop in well over a week now. Very choppy on the Mississippi River yesterday with a million boats out and strong south winds. You can get some big waves out on the main channel. We did hit 90F yesterday and dews around 70F so a true July weather day. River water was 78F.
mid to upper 80’s and showers off and on all week. here comes august!
Summer just flies by. Before you know it we’ll be talking about frost/freezes.
